Perseverance - a lesson to every one - try, try, and try again - you might just win out !

I finally found my Ellen McDermott's birth certificate!  I spent all day yesterday at the Scotland's People centre in Edinburgh - had a blast!

Found her masquerading as Helen McDermatt !
Dob was 04.11.69 - about what I suspected!

Now I just have to find Annie!

They had quite a few kids (8 actually), and my direct ancestor, as noted above, was born in 68, however, all the birth certs I have checked just say Ireland.

Of the eight kids, three would have been born prior to civil registration was introduced in 1855 - so no records to check for them.  I've seen a couple of the other younger kids's birth certs as I said above, and like Joseph(my Great grand father) they only said Ireland where the parents marriage details should be. I'm going to Scotlands People next week - so will check the other kids birth certs - maybe i'll get a break?!

Antrim / Help please - Reynolds/Connolly
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 17:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi - i'm trying to trace my Great Great grand parents who we believe left Antrim at the latest, about 1849.

He was Patrick Reynolds - believed to have been born around 12.08.1823 in Cushendall.

She was Ellen (or Eleanor) Connolly - believed to have been born around 07.07.1827, in Carnlough.

However I don't know how definite this info. is, and as I assume they were both Catholic, and were born significantly before civil registration was introduced - I guess that I will need to search the church records, which I believe I will need to come to Ireland to do?

Am I right??
Any advice gratefully received!

Whatever their exact birth dates or places, by 1850 they were in Glasgow, with their first child born in Tollcross.  They then moved to Shettleston for nearly 20 years, where my great grand father was born as the youngest child in 1868.  By 1871 they were in Omoa Square, Cleland, where they remained through 2 more generations!

My sister and I have a short break in Dublin booked in the new year ! We intend to spend a few days searching the church records, as most of my family, though in Scotland for about 150 years, nevertheless came ultimately from Ireland, mainly Ulster, from around about the time of the great famine in the mid 1840's.

As I said - any held accepted

I've also found 2 possibles for the girls on the LDS Family Search site:

both have M'Dermott instead of McDermott

the Ann record is 1867 in the Londonderry district
the Ellen is 1870, in Coleraine district

- I donk know if this is them - but dont know how to take the possibles any further?

How easy is it to order the indexes & records from LDS ??

Yes - they actually has a total of 12 children - only one of whom was male - Hugh born 1873 at Shotts (Calderhead is an area of Shotts and a registration district)!
This includes 2 Sarahs - Sarah born 1874 - dies 1876, second Sarah born just a few weeks later in 1976, and obviously named after her dead sibling ! Really very sad, but not that unusual!

Derry (Londonderry) / McDermott/ Toner families of Lismacarol

Hi - I'm new to roots chat - looking for some help!

My GreatX2 Grandparents were :- Hugh McDermott & Eleanor Toner - married 24/8/1868 at Waterside Chapel (London)Derry. - I am lucky to have a copy of the cert - aquired from Roscommon - and they were both resident in the townland of Lismacarol, His father was William McDermott Tailor, her father was Robert Toner, Kilnsman at a Cornmill.

Hugh & Eleanor moved firstly to Shotts Lanarkshire, Scotland, and shortly afterwards to Omoa/Cleland, also in Lanarkshire. Omoa was an Irish enclave where many of my mum's other relatives were already living!  Their first child, that I can trace being born in Scotland was Roseanne ( laterly Rosina) born in Jan 1971, however they had 2 older children, Annie & Ellen (my direct decendent), who, though given on later census's in Scotland, as having been born in Shotts, are not to be found in the scottish births registers.

So I'm looking for help in tracing Annie (67-68) and Ellen (69-70) in the Derry records.  On the 1881 scottish census there is a 2 year differential in their ages, which may not be correct of course, but that is the basis on which I have estimated the years they might have been born.  It might well be the case that Annie was born illegitimately, and may therfore have been registered as Toner.

I'd really like help in tracing these girls, but also in tracing previous generations.

Hugh's parents were William & Rose Tracy McDermott, and they seem to have followed Hugh & family to Scotland, as they both lived out their lives, and died in Cleland.  Hugh's brother John also died in Cleland.

Eleanor's mother also died in Scotland, in Glasgow, and would appear to have been living close to one of her sons(William), who witnessed her death cert.  However i find no trace of her husband in Scotland, and perhaps his death was one of her reasons for crossing to Scotland.

I know that Hugh's Mcdermott grand parents were another William McDermott, and a Rose McDade, from his father's death cert, and similarly that Ellen Toners parents were Ward (thats all thats given).

I would appreciate any help in tracing these known, and any unknown to me relatives, who might have stayed on in Derry - thanks in advance for all help!

Jane
