Essex Lookup Requests / Sarah SPELLER b about 1821 White Roding
« on: Saturday 16 April 22 12:07 BST (UK)  »
Sarah Speller was my 2 x great grandmother and I have problems in finding her parents.

Sarah Speller married John Speller in Leaden Roding on 27 July 1844.  They were both of full age.  John’s father was Thomas Speller a labourer and Sarah’s was Edward Speller also a labourer.  John was a bachelor and Sarah a spinster.  The witnesses were Joseph Speller (marked) and Eliza Thurley (signed).

I have Sarah in all of the censuses up to her death in 1893 except 1851 when the whole of the Dunmow Registration District is missing.  Her place of birth is consistently stated as White Roding and her age indicates she was born about 1821.  Her age at death in 1893 was 72.

I have not been able to positively identify Sarah in the 1841 census but she may be a female servant in Good Easter.

Despite many searches I have been unable to find a baptism for Sarah with a father named Edward.  I have also failed to find an illegitimate birth that would fit.

There is a family in Leaden Roding in the 1841 census as follows:

Edward Speller 46 Ag Lab
Elizabeth 45
Joseph 15
Mary 13
Charles 9
Susan 3
All born in county.

I have found baptisms for all the children and identified their mother as Elizabeth Stones. Edward married Elizabeth on 23 March 1818 at Leaden Roding.

Given the date of the marriage it is possible that Sarah could belong to this family.

I have tried to find a link between Sarah and the family of Edward and Elizabeth Speller

The death certificates of Edward and his wife Elizabeth do not help.  Edward’s son Joseph registered his father’s death in 1857.  Elizabeth died in Dunmow Union Workhouse in 1879 and her death was registered by the Workhouse Master.

Joseph Speller who was a witness at John and Sarah’s marriage could be the Joseph who is the son of Edward and Elizabeth.  Unfortunately, John had a brother also named Joseph.  I have checked the marriage of John’s brother Joseph and the 2 marriages of Edward Speller’s son Joseph.  On each of the documents Joseph Speller made his mark so I cannot compare signatures.

Edward’s daughters Mary and Susan both married.  Sarah did not witness Mary’s marriage in 1855 at Havering or that of Susan who married William Dixon in Moulsham in 1864.

Edward’s son Charles died in 1850 at the age of 18 unmarried.

So, I seem to have come to a full stop.  Can anyone suggest further avenues of research or find a possible baptism for Sarah please?  Edward Speller did not leave a will.

Well done Rosie!

So, it does seem that this is a Joy family from Yorkshire. As yet I have found no links with my Kent family.

I am afraid I have no information on them but am happy to help with your research.

Those people are not known to me.

I see the marriage of James Joy was in Yorkshire in 1911.  If I have the right person then his father could not have been born in 1893!  Can you clarify please?  Some aproximate dates and places would also be helpful.

Hi and welcome to RootsChat.

My grandfather had 2 sons.  I have done a lot of research on the Joy family from Kent and there are numerous Williams!

If you tell me a bit more about your family I will see if there is a link and anything I can help you with.

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Re: Lookup for name ..Nightfall..
« on: Saturday 02 October 21 12:57 BST (UK)  »
If you search for Nightall I think you will have more luck!

To start you off, a possible birth:

March Q 1898
Nightall Walter William Holbeach 7a 418

You should then be able to trace him in the census, the 1939 register and find his marriage, death and probate.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: LEWIN Lancelot NZFA WW1

Thanks to some sleuthing by a member of the Chatroom I now know that Lancelot qualified for the 15 Star as a Private, Reg No 1960, in the Ceylon Rifles Company.  He served in Egypt from 17 November 1914. His medal card and the medal roll both show that he moved to the NZ artillery.

Also there is a press report in the Sun dated 7 August 1915.  This reports on a letter sent by Lance Lewin to his father Captain Montagu Lewin of Spaxton Downs, Methven. The letter was written on 30 May 1915 and reports action in the Dardanelles. The press report also says that Lancelot joined the Ceylon Planters 1st Contingent on declaration of war but on arrival in Egypt he secured a transfer to the NZ Field Artillery.

Thank you for the link to the Onward Project and also to the report of soldiers returning to NZ which gives Lancel's number as 2/1136a .

I will look through the images of the soldier with the number 2/1136 in case there has been some misfiling there.  It does seem likely that the papers have been put in the wrong file.

Thank you for all your help.

Wow, what a lot of replies overnight (for me).

I will go through all of them in detail a bit later but yes I have seen the Cenotaph entry.

I also know a lot about Lancelot and his family as he was my husband's grandfather.  His parents were Kindersley Camillo Montagu Lewin (Monty) and Emma nee Pratt and he died in April 1963 in Ross on Wye.  He and his family had moved to Norfolk in the early 1930s and he moved to Herefordshire after the death of his wife.

Will go over the suggestions this afternoon.

Thank you so much for the help.
