Worcestershire / ELDRID family - on 1911 census at Hanley Castle
« on: Monday 16 January 12 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace the history of an ELDRID family.  Three of them appear on the 1911 census, http://hanleyswan.net/history/census-returns/hanley-castle-census-1911/

Eldrid, Annie Servant Widowed  45 Housekeeper Edgbaston, Warwick
Eldrid, Gladys May Boarder Single 18 Governess Moseley, Warwick
Eldrid, Phyllis Madge Boarder  7 Scholar Worcester

I think the father in this family was Joseph Walter ELDRID, who died in 1903/1904:

Deaths Mar 1904   ELDRID  Joseph Walter  63  Worcester  6c 173

and that a possible marriage of Joseph and Annie took place in 1900 (although the location is surprising!):

Marriages Dec 1900   Eldrid  Joseph Walter    Dee  Annie    Liverpool  8b 113

Joseph and Annie are together on the 1901 census.

This would mean that Gladys May ELDRID was born before the marriage, and so probably(?) took the surname ELDRID at a later date.  There is a possible birth for Gladys:

Births Sep 1892     Dee  Gladys May     Aston  6d 254

although the RD does not quite match that given on the 1911 census.

So, to summarise, I would like to find out more about the births and possible previous marriages of Joseph and Annie.  Also when Gladys took the surname ELDRID.

Any help much appreciated.

Kent / Caroline MARSHALL (nee LUCKHURST), born 1822 or 1823, Bonnington
« on: Tuesday 13 December 11 16:52 GMT (UK)  »
I'm struggling to trace Caroline after the 1881 census.  She married George MARSHALL in 1845, George died in 1863.  On the 1861 census George, Caroline and family are living at Gridily, Mersham.  On the 1881 census she is living alone at South Stone, Mersham, widowed, working as a All Works General Servant.

I have tried finding her death (or re-marriage) on FreeBMD without success.  Any help much appreciated.

Glamorganshire / Joseph Birkin EDWARDS and Jane May (nee ROGERS), Gilfach Goch, 1911
« on: Tuesday 13 December 11 16:42 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find what became of Joseph Birkin EDWARDS (born 1877, Clay Cross, Derbyshire) and his wife Jane May (nee ROGERS, born 1879, Panteg, Monmouthshire).  Joseph and Jane married in 1909 and at the time of the 1911 census were living in North Villa, Gilfach Goch.  Joseph was a Police Sergeant.  I realise that if they had children these might still be living, so I am not asking for information regarding these to be posted here.

Any help much appreciated.

London and Middlesex / John and Mary Ann WELLS, Streatham, 1911
« on: Tuesday 13 December 11 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
This thread on the Kent board refers:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,435485.0.html

John and Mary Ann WELLS are on the 1911 census at 12 Ferrers Road, Streatham.  John is a Church Keeper (I think at the local Wesleyan Church).  The census states that he was born in Worthing, Sussex, in fact he was born in Broadwater, Sussex.  Mary was born in Mersham, Kent.  John and Mary married 10 Aug 1898 in High Halden, Kent.  According to the census they had one child, already dead by 1911.  On the 1901 census John and Mary are living at 42 Hambro Rad, Streatham.

I would like to find out when and where John and Mary died, but the surname WELLS is quite common, so I have not been able to find them.  Also any records relating to their child.  Any help much appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Isabella KELSO, born c1881, daughter of James KELSO and Annie DOTHART
« on: Monday 28 November 11 16:27 GMT (UK)  »
Isabella married Robert STEWART 20 Jul 1906 in Glasgow.   The marriage record shows that she is 25, and her parents are James KELSO, a Sewing Machine Labourer and Annie DOTHART.  Isabella's address is in Glasgow, they married in Glasgow.

I'm unable to find a marriage record for James and Annie, nor a birth record for Isabella between 1880 and 1882.  There is a birth in 1878, but it is not 'my' Isabella.  I cannot find them on the 1881 (LDS) either, although Isabella my not have been born by then.  I'm starting to wonder if the KELSOs were of Irish descent.

Please can anyone help with this?  Any census record giving a place of birth for James, Annie or Isabella would be very helpful.

Ireland / William ALEXANDER and Elizabeth WELSH, both born c1800, Ireland
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 06:04 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone can help me with an Irish connection in my tree.

William ALEXANDER and his wife Elizabeth (nee WELSH) both appear on the 1841 UK census, both age 40, born Ireland.  With them 6 children born between 1825 and 1833, all born in Scotland.

The 1851 census shows William widowed, and clarifies that the children were born in Glasgow.  I cannot find an OPR for Elizabeth's death.

There is an OPR for the marriage of William and Elizabeth, 3 May 1828, Gorbals, Glasgow.

William's death record (1871, Glasgow) gives his parents as William and Mary (nee WHINNIE).

I would like to establish where William and Elizabeth came from.  It has been suggested that they might be 'Ulster Scots'.

Can anyone please suggest where I start to find any information?  This is the first Irish connection in my direct line (William and Elizabeth were my ggg-grandparents).

Many thanks for any help.

I'm hoping someone can help me find more details about Charles.  He was born in Great Barrington, Gloucestershire, England.   On the UK census in 1851, 1861 and 1871 with parents and siblings, can't find him on the 1881 UK census.

I have found a tree on WorldConnect (I have emailed the tree owner, but no response as yet) which suggests that he died in Wairoa.    The tree also says that he married Sarah Willett 12 Oct 1872 in Great Barrington, and that Sarah remarried 29 Aug 1875 in Wairoa.

So I'm hoping some kind soul can help me with details of a voyage from UK to NZ (presumably Charles and Sarah) and possibly with details of Charles' death.

I don't have much experience of NZ genealogy (most of my tree is UK).  Many thanks for any help.
