Lancashire / St Andrew's Church, Southport Lancs.
« on: Tuesday 14 December 10 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any idea how to access ( especially from a distance!) the Register entries / BMD records for the St Andrew's Church which used to be on Eastbank Street, Southport, until ( I think) the late 1960s, when it was demolished, and a Labour exchange or similar built on the site? I think it was a Victorian building originally. Unusually, it does not seem to have entries listed on the truly excellent Lancs Parish Clerks Site - that site has been wonderful for making links here there and everywhere. Is there some place where they are storing records from defunct churches like this, either physically or electronically?

Canada / Isherwoods in Canada
« on: Tuesday 16 November 10 16:26 GMT (UK)  »
Several of the family of my Great grandmother seem to have emigrated to Canada from the Southport area of Lancashire. Some went back to England, but a lot, especially a George Isherwood, and I think, a Joseph Isherwood seem to have stayed. I have in mind the Toronto area, but I could be wrong, and the 1850s onwards. I've no dates on this lot, but they seem to go back via William Whiteley Isherwood, who married Elizabeth Ann Brailsford in England, his father Robert Isherwood, who married an Ann Parry near Liverpool England, and before him a Robert Isherwood from the Bolton area of Lancs. Any idea how to pick up further details? It'd be nice to know how they went on over there. There seem to be quite a lot of Isherwoods on canadian census returns in the area.... but how to get further?

Lancashire / Last blacksmiths in Liverpool?
« on: Sunday 14 November 10 17:20 GMT (UK)  »
A friend tells me her family had the last blacksmith's shop in liverpool and that the surname was "Wood" - any ideas? I'd have thought that some aspects of smithing would be going on to the present day, so I suppose it depends how you define Liverpool....

Is there anyone researching the Threlfalls of north Meols ( Southport) from Thomas Threlfall / Alis Hunt m. 1717 onwards?

The Common Room / Deciding where to post?
« on: Saturday 02 October 10 23:24 BST (UK)  »
I wonder how you decide where to post matters - for example, I posted on a Lancashire site, as most of the family seem to come from there, and found it had been moved to "Beginners" - not that I object at all, I've only been searching for about 18 months, and only on here for a few months; and I've found everyone really helpful; even been able to add a few bits for others myself ( 'tho not much, I'm afraid) but I didn't think it would be really likely to draw reactions there as well as Lancashire surname. Could anyone help me with the correct procedure; as I'd like to try to get it right, rather than waste people's time, including the people who helpfully have to move things to the right places?

Family History Beginners Board / Isherwood + Whiteley
« on: Tuesday 14 September 10 17:53 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone got any ideas where a middle name "Whiteley" is likely to have popped up in an Isherwood family? They seem to go back to Bolton, early 19th C; but I can't find any "Whiteley" married in... any brainwaves from the wonderful experts out there?

Lancashire / Preston Shop +Cummins
« on: Friday 30 July 10 18:26 BST (UK)  »
I have such faith in the magic powers of the experts here that before I slog all the way to Preston, can anyone think of an easy way to try to confirm / refute that a James Cummins had a sort of Army& Navy type store somewhere in Preston, Lancs, round about the time of WWI ( 1914 - 1918), please? It might give me somewhere to start from, if I knew there actually was such a shop...

Armed Forces / 13th/18th Hussars (Tank Regiment)
« on: Thursday 22 July 10 18:12 BST (UK)  »
Is there any sensible way that I can trace the operations this group were involved in during most of WW2? From about 1940 onwards? Or were they split up and serving all over? I have some idea of Egypt and Germany, but little beyond that. Guidance would be appreciated.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Isherwood
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 18:12 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any ideas concerning the Bolton area origins of Robert Isherwood who married Ann Parry in 1840s? He ended up in Southport. He was from Bolton, but it seems to have beeen one of the very commonest Christain names there for an Isherwood
