World War One / Query re Casualty Form/Service Record
« on: Monday 22 January 18 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Hope somone can help me with what is probably very basic questions regarding this relatives service record. This chap was in the Royal Marines and served with the East African Exp force. I have attached his casualty form and it is relatively straight forward however it is the last few lines I have queries with.
On the 18/12/16 he goes to the hospital ship Oxfordshire and is invalided to South Africa. The next entry is on 17/05/17 saying he is embarking for England. I have tried to identify the place but struggled with it - Simonstown ????? Can someone help with that. The next column has the date 29/1/17. How does this date fit in with the 17/5/17 in the first column. Also do these entries mean he was in hospital in South Africa from December 16 until 17 May 1917. For Malaria that seems quite a long time. I have also attached the part of his service record that covers that time period as I find it hard to make sense of how the two records fit together. Does a posting happen even when you are still invalided out??? Hope this makes sense to someone.
Any help would be great

Armed Forces / Re: Ralph Munns navy records?
« on: Monday 15 January 18 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have just completed a search similar to yours and I did find the US WW2 Navy Muster Rolls 1938-1949 very helpful. They are on Ancestry. If you don't have a subscription you can always access at your local library. You already have some information given here as well as on the US Lookup but the muster rolls give all the different ships as well as the rating/post.
Also on Ancestry are the Navy Cruise Book photos and I believe there is one for Ralph in 1953.
Going on from those sources you should be able to access his military records as long as it is 62 years since separation from the Navy. As he enlisted in 1936 perhaps he did a 20 year stint. My guy enlisted in 1937 so I can't acess his records until 1919. However I applied for some details through the Freedom of Information Act and received a large amount of information. (Summary of Service with Ships names, medals and any comendations etc). It was really worthwhile.  To find out how to do this I got the information from www.mymilitaryservicerecords.com. The turnaround was 3 weeks. I also used a company to access some other military records as they were so much faster than the Archives. Not a lot of difference in costs They have a lot of information on their website and I really recommend their service. The website is www.goldenarrowresearch.com
I managed to do this from the UK very easily. Hope this helps a bit.
Good luck

World War Two / Help with some abbreviations/descriptions on Service Record
« on: Thursday 11 January 18 16:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have attached a copy of one of the pages of this service record where I have a couple of queries.
In column C the first few lines I believe refer to this guy needing medical attention. I did find Casualty clearing station for the CCS abbreviation. Could someone explain what the lines mean and does it mean he is transferred from one place to next. Please excuse my ignorance on this.
About halfway down in the same column it says he arrived  4 L of C Signals. I know he was in the Royal Corps of Signals and the only thing I can find that matches this is 'Line of Communication Corp'. Perhaps someone maybe able to set me straight.
Further on from this entry when he is in the 8th Army Signals it has 'Entered ........  Area' Then next line down it has' Left .......................Area. Then 3rd line has granted ......
Is anybody able to read and tell me what this means.
Any help would be terrific. As i said this is all new to me. Am trying to find as much information before I post here.
Many thanks in advance

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Help with finding about my uncles.
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 11:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
As someone has already found Colin in the NZ electoral rolls I took a look for James and once I  noted down the other James Pyott I believe your James is the only other candidate left.
1957 He resides at Burns House , Mosgiel, Mornington Otago as a mill worker. He is still there in 1963 but the area down as Central Otago. In 1972 he is in Sydenham Cantebury as a cook.1978 he has moved north to Auckland but is still a cook. I haven't found a death but of course he may still be alive or hopped across the water to Australia.
I know you said you didn't know of any Pyotts in NZ before your uncles but don't you think it is a bit of a coincidence James went down to Otago for work when the other family was there. Perhaps another family strand to check out. It is an unusual name. The other family emigrated in 1914.
Hope this helps a bit. If you are interested there is some good info on the internet about Arthur Burns and his mills and how he looked after his employees.
I worked out Colin's date of death from the online NZ records as 20/05/1992 but haven't found any burial/cremation. Perhaps someone in NZ has better access.

Hi
Colin emigrated to NZ 1963 aged 53 years on ship 'Rangitane' from London. Record shows him as single and a textile worker.
James emigrated in 1950 aged 33 on ship Atlantis from Southampton
Both records available on Family Search.

Hi Chris

I am based in the UK and can recommend the services of Geoff at goldenarrowresearch.
I have used him a couple of times for US army records and his service is excellent and turnaround time is pretty good compared to the archives.
Take a look at his services at www.goldenarrowresearch.com His website has good examples of what you will receive.
