Ireland / Margaret Mellon b1847
« on: Monday 17 August 15 23:18 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate a baptism in Ireland for Margaret Mellon daughter of Michael Mellon, occupation: Draper. She is believed to have been born on 25 Aug 1847. The surname appears to be most common in the north of Ireland. She married in Liverpool in 1865, the father was deceased by then and it's not known if the parents ever moved to Liverpool. Margaret had an aunt on the 1871 Liverpool Census called Catherine Mellon likely a sister of Michael Mellon. Margaret's married name was initially Morrison in Liverpool but after she moved to Denmark (where we think her husband was from) in the 1870s the name was Mogensen. The Lighter Side / Storyville: My Mother the Secret Baby
« on: Tuesday 31 March 15 14:27 BST (UK)  »
Interesting programme on TV last night about an adopted woman's search for her birth family's background in County Clare, Ireland:-

"Daisy Asquith tells the personal story of her mother's conception after a dance in the 1940s on the west coast of Ireland, in an emotional adventure in social and sexual morality."

Cork / Emigrating to USA
« on: Thursday 04 December 14 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
When people from County Cork emigrated to the USA did they get the ship from Queenstown or did they go to Liverpool to get the ship? I have some people that might be from Cork who were supposed to be going to the USA c1879 but stayed in Liverpool due to the mother being pregnant and ill. I wonder whether they came from the west of Ireland instead 1879 being the year of An Gorta Beag.

Does anyone have a connection to James Galavan son of Christopher & Catherine Galavan of Pill Lane Dublin who was baptised on 9 July 1738 at St Michan RC church in Dublin? He is possibly my ancestor who went over to the Isle of Man:-

Ireland / Irishmen in Manx Fencibles 1779-1783
« on: Saturday 21 December 13 21:36 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone found any ancestors who were recruited into the Isle of Man defence force called the Manx Fencibles? This incarnation of the Manx Fencibles only served on the island and was disbanded in 1783. A later force with a similar name served in Ulster around the time of the rebellion I'm not researching them. My ancestor James Galvin or Gallivan was recorded as a private in the battalion of Manx Fencibles on his 1782 marriage record. He doesn't appear to have been born on the island and his surname indicates he was probably Irish. He married Elizabeth Karran on the island had one daughter and died in 1791. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any Irishmen recruited into the Manx Fencibles 1779-1783?

Dublin / Beadle of St Anne's
« on: Saturday 07 December 13 01:39 GMT (UK)  »
I've found a reference to a man having a trade and being a beadle of St Anne's (C of I). Does anyone know what duties he would have performed for this church?
