Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 Census York
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 15:33 BST (UK)  »
Thanks both........

well....I have to agree it says 'visitor'......

.....but if you have seen Thomas Swales birth certificate born 8 months earlier than the 1851 census(which I have here) it shows 'Harriet Swales of Norrisons Passage'.....so she wasn't a casual overnight visitor was she?

What is beginning to puzzle me is with all these variations, how many records of the same thing exist?.......If you look at the 1841 census, separating John Metcalfe and Harriet Swales, is a liddle ole feller called Thomas Wales (with his wife down a bit further down).....

Still, it does appear that I am going to have to find out if Thomas Metcalfe and John Metcalf are one and the same person.

Thanks again, AL

PS.I'm now off to find out who Mary Swale had as a father (she is the Unm mother of Harriet)....this is going to be fun.

Thanks Pels.........

The fact that you have their status, does this mean you have viewed the original census image?

This is why I query it, because information from the York Reference Library and the Borthwick Archives Centre have Thomas Metcalfe as age 30 and Harriet Swales as 'sister'....unless of course that information was incorrectly read and relayed to me.

Basically what I am trying to do is 'prove' that Thomas Metcalfe was most likely to have been Thomas Swales' father.

In the 1841 census, I found Harriet Swales aged 14 in the same premises as a John Metcalfe (gardener) who is 40.......so, is John really Thomas Metcalfe (ages stack up) or is Thomas Metcalfe  John Metcalfes' son??

This family has been one huge problem.

Thanks again, and for the speed..........PS Perhaps its is Norrisons Passage??

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / 1851 Census York

Hi all.....

I have lost images of a census form for 1851 which I now cannot seem to locate on any of the appropriate websites.

I would be very grateful if someone could see if they can find the following for me please.

Thomas Metcalfe, Harriet Swales, Thomas Swales........They should all be at Norrisons Yard, The Shambles, York.

However, there appears to be some inconsistency with the information that I have already collected and I would like to see what interpretation can be read into the census entries.

Thomas Metcalfe is either aged 30 or 50, and is shown as being a Brother or a Visitor.

Harriet Swales is shown as being Unmarried (I think) but also as a Sister or a Visitor.

Thanks....... AL.

I would be interested to know what the Stanway address was for the Blacksmith as I used to own a property that at one stage in it's long life, was a Smithy.

I would be very interested to hear if you discover a link between either the Hatfield How/e families and/or Boxted How/e families and/or the Ardleigh/Manningtree/Mistley/Lawford How/e families.

With the latter, I am back to c1680 and as yet can't find any link prior to that.

It would appear from my records, that I have links to Zachariah Fairclough, as his son Ernest Zachariah Fairclough married Ellen (Nellie) Winifred Howe (my Gt Aunt, as far as I can ascertain)....I have quite a large amount of info on the Howe family if it is any help.

Northumberland / Re: Elizabeth Burgon, marriage look up.

I have been watching this topic with some interest.

I have been trying to help an acquaintance track his lost family.

He was born in 1942 and the only things he knows is that he was born in Brampton (Cumbria) while his mother was working as a domestic servant in Cramlington. Her name was Thomasina Burgon (or Burgen) and was apparently unmarried, but had several children.

We have drawn several blanks and the only Thomasina I can find is one that was born in Berwick 1902....but I'm not certain if this was her, because as far as I can ascertain, this one got married to a Peter Dick in Scotland and they died in Scotland in the 80s within a few years of each other.

So if any of your Burgons fit the bill, we would welcome hearing from you.

Technical Help / Re: Help! My PC has become blind to disks

Try getting this from Microsoft and running it.....It is called Autofix.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C680A7B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en

If the link doesn't work, just Google 'Autofix'....it should come up near the top with a Microsoft URL.....save it to and run it from your desktop.

It might save a lot of messing about.
