Is THIS the right family?

1891 RG12 1531 84 24
Heigham, Norfolk
John Woods 31 Commercial Printer
MArgaret 31
John A 8
Edward C 6
Frank W 4
Margaret L 1 all bn Norwich

OR is THIS the right family? (less likely, as further away)
1891  RG12 1513 38 16
Hindolveston
John Woods 41 Ag Lab
MArgaret 38
Charles 10
Herbert 9
Ethel 7
Lillie 5 all bn Hindolvesotn

The ones in bold red above are the correct ones.....The problem with John Woods is that he may be Lewis John Woods or John Money Greenacre Woods (I think he may be the former)......or just just plain old John Woods.

If he is L J Woods, then I believe his father is also a John Woods.....I guess it's a case of speculate and get some marriage certs.

Thanks again, AL.

Thanks both for the information....very useful.

I have managed to obtain the Woods / Riches marriage date as September 1881 but as yet not got the wedding certificate.......

I was hoping to get a confirmation of John Woods' father before I started getting the certs, just in case I had got the wrong John Woods!!

Searches on the three main names in my family are a bit of a pain......Woods, Howe, Enfield.......

Search Woods on Google and I'll get a timber merchant or something...

Howe gives me 'How do I clean my carburettor?'

and Enfield is a town near Ponders End!!!!

Thanks again, AL.

If anyone has information relating to the abovementioned person, particularly marriage details, I would be grateful.

I am currently researching her husband's (John Woods) line trying to identify who his parents were.

It gets worse if you throw 'Thomas WALES' or 'Thomaswales' into the equation..........

.......still, at least I can be sure of one thing..........

Thomas Swales son of Harriet, his father is either a Metcalfe, a Wales or an Unknown, therefore in my mind he is not a 'true Swales, only half one.

.......and the naming him Thomas is after his true father, again is only speculation based upon what they did in those days.........puzzling that he said his father was William Swales deceased, though.

If you apply logic, I reckon we can just about say that he had a Metcalfe father based upon the fact that Thomas Swales was born while Harriet was residing at Norrisons Passage 8 months before she was shown on the 1851 census as a Visitor of Thomas Metcalfe at the same address.

Thanks for the effort Pels, AL.

Thanks again Pels.........

I know it is very confusing.........do you think John and Thomas are one and the same person?

I appreciate coincidence and speculation is dangerous, but sometimes you have to do it to get somewhere (until its proved to be incorrect!!)

However....if you look again at the 1841 census list, you can see that John Bickerdike is in the same 'house' as John Metcalfe, while his wife is a line below Harriet Swales......The list to me suggests that they were all within the confines of the same property somehow......

Thanks for the help yesterday Pels and sandymc47.....very useful.

What I now need to do is establish if Thomas Metcalfe (gardener) age 50 at Norrisons Passage, York in the 1851 census is the same person as John Metcalfe age 40 at Clifton (I think) Belfry, York in the 1841 census!

Feeling somewhat thick-headed this morning I'm thinking I need two birth certs.......or one as the case may be.......

I wish I had never started this.....

If it is of any use at all, Peter Drury lived in Factory Lane West (off Parsonage Street) Halstead, certainly in the 1970s and into the 1980s.

He would be about 65 - 70 now.

Factory Lane West seems to have been wiped from the face of the earth, so I have no idea of where he is.

Could this be her :

Mary Swales
Christening: 21st  December 1798
Baptism Place: Holy Trinity Micklegate, York
Birth : 21st December 1798
Father : Thomas Swales
Mother: Grace Parish

Now I'll go away !

Pels.

Oh God........not another Thomas!!!!

Interesting that Thomas Swales (born 1851) stated on his wedding certificate that his father was 'deceased / William Swales'.

Thanks again, AL

Sorry, I'm not ignoring you Al, I'm trying to fathom it out ??

Harriet Swales
Christening: 26th November 1826
St. Olave's-Marygate, York
Mother's Name: Mary Swales

Pels.
Ah-ha! So it's got to you as well........Yes, I knew that Mary Swales (or 'Swale' as she should be) was Harriet's mother......Harriet also had a brother Fred. I also have another birthdate for Harriet as 1827, but this evens out through the following censuses.
