Australia / Ross-Watts of Gisborne, Victoria
« on: Friday 28 February 14 07:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi dear friends,

I need some help. The Ross-Watt family of Gisborne, Victoria, supposedly left land and money to the "Youth of Gisborne".

I need to find out as much as I can about whether this is true or not because I am trying to save a Scout hall.

Wills, Probate, family members, any help you can give would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, cheers Ted

Australia / Help needed to find parents
« on: Friday 17 January 14 05:13 GMT (UK)  »
To all the wonderful people who have helped me before. Maybe some of you with more intelligence and experience than me could help me out again.

I am looking for the parents of Albert George WALKERDEN/McGOWAN.

I have his first marriage cert and his death cert and his parents are listed as George (with either name depending on cert) and Helen Hayes.

However after looking more closely at his marriage cert, I think it might say more but I cannot figure out what it says.

Any help greatfully received. Thanks for reading, thanks for helping, cheers Ted

Australia / Arthur MOON - Where did he die?
« on: Thursday 02 January 14 04:12 GMT (UK)  »
Arthur MOON was born in Eaglehawk, Victoria in 1886. His parents were George Henry MOON and Sarah (nee CLULOW).

Arthur married Isabella Hannah Mellor WEBB in 1908 and they divorced in 1915.

I have his WW1 file and he was discharged in 1918.

After that I have no idea where he went or what he did. There is a tree on the internet that has his death  but it is unsourced so I am ignoring it for present as I can't find proof.

Thank you for reading this and thank you for any future help you might be able to give me.

Cheers, Ted

Australia / TAINTON family - came to Australia in 1841
« on: Thursday 12 December 13 04:21 GMT (UK)  »
Phillip TAINTON and his wife Jane and 4 children came to Australia on the "Burhampooter" (thats how it has been transcribed - think it looks like Birmingham?????) in 1841.

The Children were Richard 16, William 2, Hannah 10 (I know all about her) and Eliza 6.

Eliza married John THOMPSON and had 5 children. She died as Eliza FURLEY in 1888 in Ballarat.

The mother Jane's maiden name was BRINKWORTH. and Ive found Hannah, Eliza and Richard's deaths but not Williams.

Also have a death for Harriet TAINTON with a mother with the name Jane BRINKWORTH.

I've got so confused about this family that I would like some help please.

1. Is Harriet part of this family - if so how did she get to Australia?
2. When and where did Jane the mother die?
3. Are the other TAINTON's that I keep finding who are living in same areas also related?
4. What happened to William?

Oh and the family came from Horsley in Gloucestershire.

That is all I know. Hope some one with a smarter brain than me can help. Thanks for reading this,

Cheers Ted

Australia / A challenge: WHO WAS THE LAST CONVICT?
« on: Thursday 17 October 13 06:43 BST (UK)  »
I've been thinking of this for about 30 years and I have never found the answer. So I thought maybe I'd throw out the challenge to the wonderful, clever people here at Rootschat.

Who was the last person listed as a convict?

Who was the last person to die who came here as a convict?

There are wonderful lists and descriptions of the first fleet and the 2nd fleet, and I know the Hougoumont was the last convict ship that landed in WA with 269 convicts on board, but WHO WAS THE LAST CONVICT?

Australia has recorded the last ANZAC and we are getting close to the last WW2 Digger. People keep trying to figure out who "The Man from Snowy River" was. And I think it is important that we find the last convict.

Just putting the thought out there in case anyone else has thought about it too

Cheers, Ted

Australia / Joseph Frederick CRIPPS - arrived Australia 1854
« on: Friday 11 October 13 04:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi dear Rootschatters,

According to PROV - Assisted Passengers list Joseph aged 23 arrived with Harriett aged 21 and Joseph aged 0.

Joseph married Agnes Maude Elizabeth WILLIAMS in Australia in 1865.

I would like any information anyone can find on Harriett, and Harriett and Joseph's children. I have been researching and I have completely muddled myself up so I would like a fresh (or a few fresh) eyes on this.

I tried to research again from the beginning, as if I had never met them before, but I got into the same muddles. So New help of any kind without prejudice will be greatfully received.

Cheers, Ted

Australia / Herbert Gladstone LITTLE
« on: Thursday 26 September 13 06:20 BST (UK)  »
Herbert's parents were Martha Ann FARLEY and James William Richard LITTLE. On Martha's death certificate (dated 1891) there are 8 children listed.
Elsie Maud, William (dec), Emily Marion, Herbert (dec), Hilda, Annie, Samual and Ida.
(I can't read the ages of the children the copy of the death certificate is not very clear)

I believe Herbert died as a child but I can't find a birth or a death for him. The family lived in Moonee Ponds in Victoria.

Can someone help me find him please?

Cheers Ted

The Common Room / 1911 Census
« on: Wednesday 11 September 13 02:44 BST (UK)  »
When I first became a member of Rootschat, it was around the time that the 1911 census was released.

It was made very clear very early that posting or requesting anything about the 1911 census was not allowed.

However, lately I have found a few posts where the 1911 census information is given. I went looking for the topic where the rules on the 1911 census is talked about, but I can't find it.

Have I missed something? Have things changed? Are we now allowed to quote the 1911 census when helping others?

Cheers, from a very confused Ted
