Leicestershire / George William NEAL's children
« on: Thursday 05 September 13 10:32 BST (UK)  »
George William NEAL married Ann Rebecca FOLEY and according to the 1911 census they had 11 children and 2 of them are dead.

The children I know of are:
(the census dates are where I have found the children with the parents)

George born 1871 according to the 1881 census
Elizabeth b 1872 (no clues on this except someone Else's tree - Elizabeth and Lizzie could be the same person)
Lizzie b 1873 (1881 census)
Katherine b 1875 (1881 census)
Willoughby b 1877 (1881, 1891, 1901)
Philip b 1881 - d 1950 (my direct decedent - 1891, 1901)
Fanny Coley b 1883 (1891, 1901, 1911)
John Lee b 1885 (1891,1901, 1911)
Frederick M b 1889 (1891, 1901, 1911)
Rebbecca b 1893 (1901, 1911)

I am hopeless at finding births deaths and marriages in UK. Most of my research experience is in Australia. So I am hoping some kind soul can help me.

Thanks for reading, thanks in advance for helping,

Cheers, Ted

Australia / It's amazing what you find on TROVE when bored!
« on: Wednesday 28 August 13 05:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello dear RootsChatters,

Last night my hubby and ss were watching tv and I wasn't interested. So I put some words into the TROVE search engine and found this.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/72339593

I've now done as much research as I can on the internet regarding the perpetrator. Yes he is related. Yes I know who his parent's were, and yes I know he died in Ararat Lunatic Asylum in 1961 aged 63. I have deliberately kept his name out of this topic because there are people still alive who don't know about this crime. If you want more information please PM me.

But what I'd like to know is if he was unfit to plead (as found in another article) and held at Bendigo Goal at the Governor's pleasure, how do I find out what happened to him between 1913 and 1961, and where would he be buried?

Any help, comments, general discussion would be most appreciated.

Cheers, Ted.

Australia / Billy Freeman - Convict. What was he doing between 1837 - 1840?
« on: Monday 26 August 13 13:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello dear Rootschatters,

William George Freeman was a 15 year old convict who came to NSW on "The John" in 1832.

He got his ticket of leave on 19 April 1837 in New South Wales. The next time I can find him is in Adelaide on 15 September 1840 when he marries Sarah Ann Stacey.

I know most things about him before 1837 and after 1840. I know of all his children and most of his decendents.

I just want to know how he got from NSW to SA. There are family stories and information on various websites, but I want proof, and I am finding it hard to find.

Hope someone with better knowledge of SA than me, or with better resources, or just better at finding things will be able to help me.

Thanks for reading this, and thanks in advance for anything you may find.

Cheers, Ted

2nd marriage is to Syndey WOODLAND at age 30 years in Cranbourne - they had 2 children the eldest was Ada age 36.

The person who registered the death was an authorised agent.

I cannot find a marriage between Michael MOORE AND Margaret Mary and I cannnot find a death for Michael MOORE.

I hope someone can help me find this information. Thanks in advance, cheers Ted

Australia / Has anyone had any luck finding where a child grew up?
« on: Friday 19 July 13 04:54 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out where 3 children grew up.

People are helping me on other theads - so this is just a general quetion.

The state I'm interested in is Victoria, but what I am looking for is tips and resources people have used to find children in Australia.

I have used the UK census extensively for my UK families but as we don't have this wonderful resource in Australia - what else is there that I can use to find these children?

Cheers Ted

Australia / Will the real mother of Louisa Maude CORBETT please stand up?
« on: Friday 05 July 13 06:34 BST (UK)  »
Louisa Maude CORBETT was born in 1869 in Victoria. Her father was John CORBETT (this is consistent on all documents I can find).

On her birth certificate her mother is Mary CORBETT
On her death certificated her is May Flor FLETCHER
and on 1 Ancestry tree her mother is Mary WELSH
an on another she is Catherine HAWLEY

John CORBETT did marry a Catherine HAWLEY and had other children with her.

This is not a direct line in my family so I am trying to find this out on the cheap. It all started because there is a little baby with no name who is buried near hubby's family and I was positive this baby belonged on his family tree. Louisa Maude CORBETT was her mother and John CORBETT was her grandfather and John CORBETT is on my family tree but I didn't know anything about Louisa.

Sorry for the waffle. I hope the facts are clear. Thanks for reading. Thanks in advance for helping. Cheers, Ted

Durham / Mary GILROY and George MOON can anyone find anymore children?
« on: Tuesday 25 June 13 04:27 BST (UK)  »
This request crosses boarders as this family ended up in Durham. You have been so very helpful with this family previously that I thought I'd ask for help on the Durham board before I go to the Northumberland board.

Mary GILROY b 1792 in Northumberland married
George MOON B 1791 also in Northumberland and had the following children

Michael Alfred Moon b 1821 also Northumberland – d 1874 Chester, England
Thomasina Moon b 1824
Henry Moon b 1826 Durham – d 1899 in Australia
George Moon b 1828
Samuel Moon b 1833Durham – d1905 in Australia
Mary Ann Moon  b 1835
Elizabeth Moon b 1838

I have gleaned most of this information from the census but as Mary and George were in their 50's in 1841 and their eldest child on that census was 20. I am presuming there were more children before Michael who had already left home. I would like to find them if someone with more knowledge of England than me, can help me.

The reason we are asking this question is because we are trying to trace whether there were more family who came to Australia.  There are 2 distinct MOON families in Australia, in different states, we would like to make sure if they are related or not.

Thank you in advance and thank you for reading this - and if I have made any mistakes please correct me. Some of the information I have given is guess work.

Cheers, Ted

Australia / This is a treasure hunt - "Help me find Jane?"
« on: Wednesday 19 June 13 05:46 BST (UK)  »
While driving to work this morning I listened to an interview on ABC radio here in Victoria and thought we could help with one of the mysteries.

A ship's Figurehead was donated to the Nepean Historical Society a few years ago and it has been identified as being from the ship named "Sea" that was wrecked at "the Heads" in 1853. The ship was leaving Melbourne and it is believed the captain was "hungover" after just getting married.

Using TROVE I have found the captain's name was James McKay and he married Jane Taylor on 23 May 1853. Also according to TROVE the shipwreck occurred on the 31st of May 1853.

According to the interview James went down with his ship, but they haven't yet found what happened to Jane?

If you want a treasure hunt - here's one - lets find Jane!

Cheers, Ted

Australia / Are these Webb's related?
« on: Saturday 15 June 13 13:18 BST (UK)  »
I have a marriage.

Benjamin WEBB married Caroline WEBB on 10 Jul 1872 in Eaglehawk, Victoria.

They had 7 children and then Caroline died in 1888.

Benjamin went on and re-married and had more children.

Fresh eyes on this would be nice, thanks in advance. Cheers Ted
