« on: Wednesday 25 November 09 01:35 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the deaths of Theodoca Cosher who is 72 on the 1841 census and Theodoca Neal age 1 on the 1841 census.

I can't find them on any other census.

Cheers Ted

Its a long time since we looked at his records. Maybe we have it wrong and his father paid for anothr plaque (if so I wonder where it is?).

We do know his name is on the Menin Gate though. We would love one day to be at the evening service.

Thanks again for everything, Ted

Family History Beginners Board / I'm new and Australian with all English ancestors
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 08:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm new to this forum, and on the other forums I belong to, there is a place where we introduce ourselves but I wasn't sure where to introduce myself on this one.

I have been tracing my family tree for 2 years. All of it is in England. I was born on the Wirrel and my parents emigrated.

So I have Gadsby's, Neals and Farmer's from Leicestershire and Pearsons from Nantwich and Fitchett's who were canal people.

I have a 4 x gr grandmother who was an unmarried mother who managed to keep all of her children (except that she and 3 of them ended up in the workhouse at one stage).

So anyway, I just wanted to say hello, and hope I can help people the way I've been helped with my tree over the years.

Cheers Ted

Hi Rick,

I am from Australia too, and I am just starting out on this site, but started on the family tree 2 years ago.

I found most of the "characters" on my tree (not just names and dates) using the Census. In fact I've become a bit addicted to the census. I use Ancestry.co.uk as my best way of searching because the search engine is fantastic.

When I find a family on the census, I try and find the address where they are living (this can be hard and sometimes you have to go back to page 1 of the census and check the route the census collector walked on census night). I then google map the address to see if the house is still there.

The occupations from the census also give you a good insight to the family and if you are lucky they might belong to a Guild or be listed in a directory.

I also look up to see if the village has a website. They often have really good historical photos.

After all this I put a time line together for the family. Its a bit like dropping in on them every 10 years to see how they are going.

Before 1841 is harder though, especially from Aus. unless you have a contact in UK who doesn't mind searching for you.

If you are planning a trip over, do as much research as you can before you go Hubby and I were there earlier this year, and now I am kicking my self that  didn't spend more time before we went researching so I could do the hands on stuff when I got there. Did find "the convicts" family home though so that was a bonus.

Hope this helps, cheers Ted

Wow Keith, what a wonderful kind offer.

I live in Australia and we have only recently realized that Hubby's gr. uncle has a plaque on the Menin Gate.

We found out when we got his war records. His father paid for the plaque and the receipt is in the records.

His name was John Henry FREEMAN and he is on Panel 27. He was in the 46th battalion, and as far as we can tell no one i the family has ever seen the plaque.

It would be wonderful for all us Australian Freemans to finally be able to see what John Henry's dad paid for (it wasn't cheap).

If anyone is looking for Australian WW1 vetrans this site is excellent http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/index.html.

Thank you so very much, from Ted
