Australia / Ladies fashion store - 1940s - George St, Sydney
« on: Sunday 27 June 21 09:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.
Hoping someone might have a good memory, or an idea how to find this one...

My Nan worked in a ladies fashion store around 1947 in George St. Sydney. She did some various jobs and her mother in law and aunt in law did alterations at the same store.

She thinks the owner was Greek. She thinks it was called Links/Lynx (verbal recollection only!). Name not 100% but she's pretty sure it started with an L.

I am particularly looking for a photo of store - if only a streetscape of the area.

Any ideas for searching or information welcome.
Thanks, Katharine.

Hi all. I have a copy of a photograph from New England are of NSW. After thoughts on the year of photo. I was thinking 1870s? Also happy to hear estimates on age of sitter. I was thinking late 20s, early 30s perhaps.
It is a carte de visite. Perhaps someone is knowledgeable enough to advise if that might be a wedding ring on the finger as I know photographs were sometimes reversed in photography process.
Thanks, Katharine.

Australia / Travelling artist 1840s/1850s NSW
« on: Wednesday 26 May 21 08:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. I have a photo of a framed oil portrait of an ancestor who lived in NSW. I think it has been painted in the 1840s/1850s (sitter died in 1855). Family lore is it was painted by a travelling artist. It's in a frame with what appears to be Cedric Wirth F A A written across corner.
That is not the sitter's name, nor a family or local name.
I presume it is either the name of the artist, or the framer perhaps. Any leads would be great. Also any idea what F A A might mean?
I have already done a search on Google and Trove but can't find anything relevant.
I could not attach photo for some reason - file too large.
Thanks, Katharine.

England / Seeking whereabouts of antique family pewter.
« on: Monday 17 May 21 14:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. I found a reference to some pewter that was still in family possession in the first half of 20th century. The owners had a son, who to my knowledge did not have children. I think I found some information that indicated he (or his wife) left his sister in law as executor of estate. That was around mid century.

Does anyone have any ideas for tracking down the family pewter? Are there records for antique sales that might be searchable?

Thanks, Katharine.

Australia / Patrick Mckenna- convict in Wellington area NSW
« on: Wednesday 08 July 20 11:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. Just wondering if anyone might see any further details for a Patrick McKenna who was possibly living in the Wellington area for a decade or so.
I have him as a convict arriving on the lady mcnaughton in 1835 having being tried in Louth that year for stealing clothes. He got his ticket of leave in Wellington in 1841 ( also known alias mckiernan).
He got his certificate of freedom in 1846.
I can see a child james born in 1858 to Patrick and Catherine mckenna. This could be him. I can also see an article on trove showing a Patrick mckenna was in bathurst gaol for three months hard labour in July 1860 for receiving stolen property.
Looking for any further details of this man. A death perhaps?
Katharine.

« on: Tuesday 07 July 20 08:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. Hoping someone reading might have copies of photographs from 1950s and 60s of Northmead Public School. Also after early 1960s for Northmead High School. Thanks, Katharine.

Hi all. Apologies if this query had already been answered on this forum previously.
My grandfather was illegitimate. I did an ancestry DNA test but nobody seems to be 'connected' through this line.
My grandfather had a son (my dad) and I have a brother. I was considering Y-DNA to hopefully find answers.

My question therefore is: which companies (with availablity in Australia) have the best Y-DNA testing. And more importantly, which companies will show database matches just as Ancestry DNA does.

Thanks, Katharine.

Hi all. Hoping someone can help me out. I have found newspaper article referring to a Francis S. Gore (also noted as a Francis Saunders Gore, and as Professor) who was living and working in Richmond, Virginia in the 1830s.
Can anyone see him in this area or later? I am looking for any spouse or children he might have had, or what became of him?
Thanks, Katharine.
