Renfrewshire / 1841/1851 Census Lookup Please - SANDS
« on: Tuesday 22 March 05 16:26 GMT (UK)  »
Could I please request a lookup for the following family from 1841 or 1851 census:

Information below given for 1841:

John SANDS (possible occupations - farmer, innkeeper, toll collector)
Janet SANDS (nee MORRISON)

children:
Margaret SANDS (chr. 1812 Govan - marr. 1837 Alex TURNER, Paisley Abbey + Gorbals)
Jean SANDS (born c.1819 - marr. 1840 Wm McINDOE, Barony + Govan)
Janet SANDS (born c.1821 Abbey RENF - marr. 1843 Alex LECKIE, Paisely High Church + Gorbals)
Elizabeth SANDS (born Inclissnoce (??) RENF - marr. 1843 John SMELLIE, Paisley Abbey + Govan)
Mary SANDS (born c.1824 - marr. 1845 John MUIR, Gorbals)
Annie SANDS
Robert SANDS (born c.1826 Paisley RENF - marr. 1852 Janet SCOTT, Liverpool ENG)
John SANDS (born c.1830)
William SANDS (born c.1837 RENF)

I have included above, all the information I have which might help identify the family, or give an indication of their whereabouts. Most of the information is as presented in the IGI, but much of it has been supported directly or indirectly from other sources. The locations given after the marriage are those provided in the IGI (sometimes two different locations are provided - not sure why).

I expect that most of the children will be absent from John and Janet's household, but the purpose of this enquiry is really to try to find out something definitive about the parents, of whom I know almost nothing. I would also be especially interested in information on the sons Robert (my ancestor), William, and John, who emigrated to Australia in 1853.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated,

Kindest regards,

Marc Roberts

Could I please request a lookup for the following ancestors who I believe were living in the vicinity of Sempringham or nearby Pointon in Linconshire in 1841 and 1851.

Charles CHRISTIAN aged 17 in 1841 (emigrated to Australia in 1854)

and his parents

William CHRISTIAN aged 45 in 1841 (dec 1850 - bur. Sempringham)
Susanna CHRISTIAN aged 38 in 1841 (chr. Sempringham 1803)

I would also be very interested in other CHRISTIANs living in this area (if there aren't too many), as I do not know where William CHRISTIAN was born and any clues from nearby possible relatives would be very welcome.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bedfordshire Completed Look ups / 1841 Census Lookup Please - Thurleigh
« on: Tuesday 15 March 05 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
Could I please request a lookup of the 1841 census for a woman named Sarah TINSLEY.

There was a Sarah ROWNEY who married a William TINSLEY in Thurleigh BEDS in 1806. I would like to try to determine whether this Sarah was one of my ancestors or not. They had a daughter Mary who was born in 1806.

My ancestor was a Sarah MOORE (born c.1774) of Wilshamstead (Wilstead) BEDS who married George ROWNEY in Southill BEDS in 1795. They have one child (John) in Wilshamstead, then seem to disappear. I suspect that George may have died and wonder whether Sarah might have remarried in 1806. She would have been around 67 years old if she were still alive in 1841. I know that her son John ROWNEY settled at Whitwick Green, near Thurleigh, and already have his census data from 1841.

Somebody who looks like the following would be very welcome:

Sarah TINSLEY (M) or (W) aged 65 born BEDS

Any other ROWNEY's present in Thurleigh would also be of great interest.

Many thanks for any assistance,
Regards,
Marc Roberts

Could I please request a lookup for the family and household details of the following two people in 1851:

James PLANT aged 59 born Sibsey LINCS
Mary PLANT aged 49 born South Creake NORFOLK

They are husband and wife, but there is a possibility they may not be living together.

I understand that James was a tenant farmer at Sibsey around that time. In 1855 his wife and children left England and emigrated to Australia, leaving him behind. It is understood from information from a Sibsey church record that James lost his farm due to drunkeness. He lived on for quite a number of years after his family abandoned him, eventually dying in Sibsey in 1880. I would be very grateful for any lookups from either 1861 or 1871 which might give some idea of what his circumstances were after his family departed, ie. whether he remarried or possibly lodged with relatives.

I hope this is not too much to ask. I would like to sort out the whole situation, and I'm hoping it is easier to do it all together rather than through a succession of posts.

Any help would be very much appreciated,
Thank you kindly,

Marc Roberts

Hello,

I would be very grateful if somebody could check for my gggg-grandfather Bartholomew LINCH in the London census of 1851. He would have been around 57 years of age at that time and is believed to have been christened at Saint Katherine Creechurch, in London. His wife Frances (probably Fanny) would have been around 53 years old if still living. She was christened in Shoreditch.

ie.
Bartholomew LINCH aged 57 born London
Fanny LINCH aged 53 born London

I suspect Bart himself died in 1859 in the Wandsworth District, in Surrey, and I believe that at least one (and possibly two) of his sons, William Robert LINCH (and maybe a Thomas), were living in Hope Street, Battersea, in the 1861 census. William was married in the Camberwell District, possibly at Peckham, in 1848, and William's first son was born in Battersea in 1850, so if Bart happened to be living near William he would probably be found in one of these two general areas (Wandsworth or Camberwell Districts in Surrey).

Any help would be much appreciated,
Thank you kindly,

Marc Roberts

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / 1851 census lookup please - RADFORD/REDFORD
« on: Saturday 05 March 05 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
Can somebody please help me unravel a puzzle regarding my ancestors from the RADFORD family in Oxfordshire?

My ancestor William RADFORD emigrated to Australia with his brother John around 1870. John used the surname REDFORD after arriving in Australia, William used RADFORD. Their parents were named as Thomas RADFORD and Fanny BATES on William's death certificate. William's place of birth is given as Tiddington.

Looking at baptism records there was a Thomas & Fanny REDFORD raising their family at Checkendon, and a Thomas & Fanny RADFORD with a couple of children (including William and John) christened at Albury (near Tiddington). The names and ages of the children involved are spaced such that they could easily be the same family or two different families.

The following gives the two families as they might appear as separate families in 1851:-

*Checkendon 1851*
Thomas REDFORD (M)
Fanny REDFORD (M) aged 52, born Witheridge, Oxfordshire
Richard REDFORD aged 21
Elizabeth REDFORD aged 19
John REDFORD aged 17
Peter REDFORD aged 14
Philip REDFORD aged 12
Julia Anne REDFORD aged 9

*Albury 1851*
Thomas RADFORD (M) ag lab
Fanny RADFORD (M)
Thomas RADFORD aged 10 (possibly deceased)
William RADFORD aged 5
John RADFORD aged 2
James RADFORD aged 0 (christened 1851 in Albury)

So it would appear that my ancestors were living at Albury in 1851, when James was christened. A check of the census in 1851 at Albury should determine whether the family at Albury is the same family from Checkendon. If somebody could check this for me it would be a terrific help.

Many thanks,
Marc Roberts

Devon Lookup Requests / 1841 Plymouth Charles Martyr - GOULD (with address)
« on: Wednesday 02 March 05 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
Could I please request a lookup from the 1841 census for the following family:-

Henry GOULD aged 57, born Bickleigh DEV (near Plymouth)
Elizabeth GOULD aged 56, born Whitchurch DEV
Eliza GOULD aged 14, born Plymouth

They were living at 16 Higher Street, Plymouth Charles Martyr, in the 1851 census, and are believed to have had a shop in Higher Street in 1812. So I am hoping they might have been around the same address in 1841.

In the 1851 census, Henry and Eliza's son, Henry (jr), was recorded as a separate household at the same address (16 Higher Street) as his parents. In 1841 his family might have contained the following people:-

Henry GOULD aged 27, born Plymouth DEV, coal porter
Sarah GOULD aged 24, born Lustleigh DEV
possibly Richard Henry aged 0, born Plymouth DEV around 1841

There is a strong possibility that Henry and Elizabeth GOULD had a number of additional children. It would be very nice if some of these were suggested from the 1841 census returns.

Any census information on the GOULD family in Higher Street, Plymouth Charles, from 1841 would be of great interest.

Many thanks,
Marc Roberts

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / 1851 Bristol lookup please - Martha HOARE
« on: Wednesday 02 March 05 09:41 GMT (UK)  »
Could I please request a lookup for the following person in the 1851 census for Bristol:

Martha HOARE aged around 24 at that time.

The following information may be helpful:-
*Her father was believed to have been named Uriah HOARE, who was a cooper by trade.
*She was thought to have been born in Dorset.
*She was married to John WARD in 1853 in the parish of St Philip & Jacob in Bristol. John WARD may have been christened in the same parish in 1829, with parents John and Elizabeth WARD.
*Martha and John had a son born in Bedminster in 1854.

I would be most interested to find out whether Martha (and possibly her parents) had moved to Bristol by 1851. Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Marc Roberts
