Completed Census Requests / Re: Census for Victoria Australia
« on: Wednesday 23 February 05 11:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Martina,

Have you tried looking at the electoral rolls for Victoria. There are rolls for (at least) 1856, 1899, 1903, 1912, etc.

Not everybody was on the rolls, but many people were, and you will sometimes find both husbands and wives listed. You get occupations, where they lived, and I think the 1856 microfiche even had images of the original little index cards themselves, with all kinds of interesting notes about people's jobs and locations scribbled in.

There are also some good Directories dating back to the 1840's which have a lot of names in them, along with occupations, locations, etc.

Cheers,
Marc

PS: In addition to Trish's note below, there is also an 1841 census for South Australia available.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Ann ROBERTS in Marylebone 1841/51
« on: Wednesday 23 February 05 11:06 GMT (UK)  »
I would greatly appreciate census details for the household of my GGGG-Grandmother Ann ROBERTS from 1841 and 1851, if possible. I am trying to trace her death, which I believe took place in 1853, and as her name is so common I need some good information on her whereabouts around that time.

In 1841 her family should be:

Ann ROBERTS (W) aged 54 (believed born in Stoke Goldington BUCKS)
Mary Ann ROBERTS aged 26 (born Stoke Goldington BUCKS)
Anna Maria ROBERTS aged 19 (birthplace unknown)
Amelia (or Emily) ROBERTS aged 15 (probably born in London MDX, possibly Holborn or Marylebone)

The following information is what I know of her family's whereabouts around the relevant period. I'm hopefull that it might make the job of locating her family in the census a little easier.

The last two daughters were christened in Holborn in 1826.

Ann's husband Samuel ROBERTS died at 51 Richmond Street in St Johns Wood, Marylebone, in 1839, but I'm unsure whether that was his own address.

Another child not listed above was married at St George's Hanover Square (SGHS) in 1839 and lived at Camden Town.

Daughter Mary Ann was married by 1851 and living around Marylebone at that time, but I'm not sure how long before that she was married. There was a Miss Mary Ann ROBERTS with a milliner's business in Old Bond Street (near Hanover Square) in the 1846 London Post Office Directory, which could have been her. Her future husband, William GIBSON appears to have been a solicitor with an office on Lincolns Inn Fields near Holborn at that time.

In 1841, I think it is most likely that Ann and her family are still living in the Marylebone area. I don't know the fates of the two youngest daughters, so it would be interesting to find out whether they were in her household at that time.

In 1851, it is still likely that Ann is living in Middlesex, but possible that she may have moved to Battersea if she were living near her son Samuel and his family at that time.

Any information on Ann ROBERTS at these times would be most helpful. Information on other members of the family would also be greatly appreciated if no extra trouble is involved.

Many thanks,
Marc Roberts.

Bedfordshire Completed Look ups / Re: ROWNEY family around Sharnbrook 1841
« on: Friday 28 January 05 13:15 GMT (UK)  »
Many thanks, that is fantastic David.

That certainly seems to be my family. Missing George is interesting, since he also went his own way after they arrived in Australia. I might have to check up on him a bit more. Edith was old enough to be out on her own. She eventually married a Thomas CLAYTON from Thurleigh in 1847, but could have been anywhere in the meantime.

Thanks again,

All the best to you,
Marc

Bedfordshire Completed Look ups / ROWNEY family around Sharnbrook 1841
« on: Friday 28 January 05 04:24 GMT (UK)  »
Any help in sorting out the following ROWNEY family/s from the 1841 census would be greatly appreciated.

Thomas ROWNEY aged 20
Edith ROWNEY aged 18
William ROWNEY aged 16
George Henry ROWNEY aged 13
Mary Ann ROWNEY aged 12

I believe they might all be siblings, but cannot be sure. The three men all emigrated to South Australia together in 1845, and Edith married in Sharnbrook in 1847, then emigrated in 1849 as Edith CLAYTON, living closely with the other three after arrival. Edith's father was believed to have been John ROWNEY, and she was thought to have been born at Sharnbrook. Mary Ann was married in Felmersham in 1850, and became Mrs Samuel SWANNELL. Her father was also John ROWNEY, and she was thought to have been born at Bletsoe. After her marriage she lived for a time at Radwell, before returning to Felmersham.

Any information about ROWNEYs living in the Sharnbrook, Bletsoe, Felmersham, Radwell, or nearby areas at the time of the 1841 census would be very helpful.

Thank you kindly,
Marc Roberts
