Cavan / SMITH - Blackwater Bridge
« on: Monday 12 December 05 11:23 GMT (UK)  »
Patrick Smith son of Thomas Smith labourer and Bridget McBrian/McBryan left Blackwater Bridge, Templeport Parish in 1838 and migrated to NSW.

I'm probably looking for the impossible, but does anybody know of this family?

I'm also interested in what Blackwater Bridge was like in the 1830s - how large was it (I can't find it now), what sort of businesses were there, any local schools (noting that the family was Catholic) so there's probably no records anyhow.

Thanks all for any information.

Cavan / Smith & McBryan of Templeport Parish Co Cavan
« on: Sunday 15 May 05 23:10 BST (UK)  »
My gg grandfather was Patrick Smith from Blackwater Bridge in Co Cavan.  I have his Bounty claim here whwere his sponsors claimed payment for him.  It shows he was the son of Thomas Smith a abourer and bridget McBryan his spouse.  He was 18 when he left in 1837/8 for Australia.  He was listed as a lfarm labourer and a Catholic.

The referees quoted on his form were:
Mr Jas Rutledge, brother of William Rutledge aka King Billy in the Colony for his success in business;
Mr Francis McGauran;
Mr PP Drumralg;
Rev George D Beresford, Church Minister.

Mr Jas Rutledge is noted as being from Bally magail.

I would be really pleased to hear from anybody who knows of this family or can tell me about Blackwater Bridge.

Does anybody know of Bally magail or any of patrick's sponsores?

Thanks all

Argyllshire / Smiths & McDonalds of Ardnamurchan pre 1841 Census
« on: Sunday 15 May 05 14:34 BST (UK)  »
I've been very lucky in the last couple of months finding information about my relatives.  But, I have Smiths from Ardnamurchan who left before the 1841 Census and am trying to find anyone who might know of the family.  I am also seeking advice to identify sources of information which might help me track them back.

They left in 1839 on the George Fyfe (Voyage 118) http://www.theclearances.org/clearances/ports.php?portid=36.  I have a copy of their onshore Australian immigration records which show the following:

John and Mary Smith from Ardnamurchan.  John was the son of John and Mary (McDonald).  Mary's parents were Hugh and Catherine possibly McGurchan/McGeechan.  John and Mary's fathers were listed as farmers.

Their children who travelled with them were Lachlan 19, a stockman, Roderick 16, Hugh 14, George 12, Mary 10 and Margaret 9 1/2.  Lachlan is down as able to read and write which his parents were unable to do.  They were Catholics.

How likely is it that a crofters' child could read and write at that time?  Where might they have got their schooling from?   What Catholic parishes existed and what records might still be available for the period from 1810 to say 1838 when they left?

Any suggestions about how I might track this family back appreciated.

Thanks all

Argyllshire / Whiteford of Campbeltown and Morton of Newmilns
« on: Wednesday 19 January 05 11:17 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for information about James Whiteford who married Jean Wylie on 27/8/1849 at Mid Glencraig Campbelltown.  James and Jean migrated to Australia on the "Garland"arriving in Melbourne in July 1852.  They had two children when they left Scotland, Mary 2 and Thomas 1.

James was the son of a Captain Whiteford.  Jean was the daughter of Thomas Wylie fo Caddle Park Ardrossan and the grand daughter of George Morton of "Skylahill" which I believe was in Newmilns.

Would be very pleased to have any feedback about the families and any information about  the "Garland", or where was Mid Glencraig might have been.  It has been suggested that "Captain" Whiteford may have referred to the skipper of a fishing boat of some sort.

Thanks

Anne
