The Common Room / Where is / was Malcalf in Derbyshire?
« on: Wednesday 10 July 19 16:38 BST (UK)  »
I have a quantity of old documents going back to the 17th century, and in the 18th century the village or farmstead of Malcalf in the High Peak area of Derbyshire keeps popping up. But I cannot locate where this was ... is anyone able to offer suggestions?

Does anyone recognise the two locations shown here? The village seems to have some petrol pumps in view, and the other I guess is a school or college.

Is anyone able to recognise this school in the photograph? It was built in 1910 but there are no more details. Thanks for your interest.  :)

I'd be happy if anyone could identify the location of this old postcard. The postmark is partially obliterated but it seems to say "__anton." Maybe room for two or three letters missing. The proprietor in 1909 was Edward Brown.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Hannah Pickard of Ossett
« on: Tuesday 29 November 16 18:28 GMT (UK)  »
I think this is probably a long shot, but I am trying to find a photograph or engraving of Hannah Pickard, who died in Ossett in 1891 aged 53. The reason is this:
When she died she left a large amount of money in her will to many charities, and also to her local town council and churches. The council were instructed to use the money to provide a drinking fountain in the market place. This was done and a beautiful structure graced the centre of the town for many years. However in 1959 it was removed, to be eventually placed in a local park, vandalised, and eradicated altogether.
A group of local historians are trying to erect a memorial to her for the good nature of her bequests, and to undo to some extent the disrespect which has been shown to her generosity by subsequent councils. We have lots of information about her, the bequests etc, but we are missing one vital thing - an image of the good lady. It's quite possible that - owing to the wide varieties of charities and institutions she helped - somewhere a picture may have been published, whether it be local press, a church magazine, a periodical like 'The Gentleman's Magazine' or whatever.
If anyone can help in any way we would be most grateful - it would be fantastic.

The Common Room / Parish registers dates
« on: Wednesday 31 August 16 10:30 BST (UK)  »
I'm currently doing some research for a farmer whose land I use my metal detector on, and I am looking at the early history of his farm. Just a quick question about parish registers: When a date is recorded in the early 17th century, would xvjth be recording 15th or 16th? ie does the letter j count as part of the number or the 'th' at the end of the number? I was assuming it was part of the number until I came across an entry dated xxvjth followed by an entry dated 25th - this has thrown a question mark over all the dates I have recorded up to this entry.
