Hi

My grandmother on my fathers side always used to sit near an open fire in her little cottage in Pudding Bag Lane, Normanton on Soar, Notts, with a bottle of Milk Stout by her chair leg and would continually rub her right hand up and down her right thigh.

I was only 6 years old when she died, but whenever we entered her cottage, her first words were usually "There is an Apple, Orange or Sweet (or whatever)in the top drawer of the sideboard"

When I started to trace my ancestors in 1989, imagine my surprise to find grandmother on the 1891 and 1901 census; working at John Players in Nottingham - Rolling Cigars!!

Explains a lot dosent it as they were always done by hand.

I know that this contribution may not be pc on a number of counts but I heard once that the best cigars came from Cuba where they were hand-rolled on a virgin's thigh.

Hallo Fitty, I can't be 100% certain but I think I heard it mentioned on one of Clive James' trips to those faraway places where the poor old  TV licence payer can't afford to go.  Mmm come to think about it they don't seem to have progs like that now..maybe the trough is empty. So now the derivation is sorted mine's a pint thank you very much and no cigar....back to genealogy

A TV what????:-\

I love the smell of Cigars, they remind me of an old Chemist shop that i lived near in Hunslet Carr.  The chemist never had one out of his mouth .  lol

Thinking back, it was a truly lovely shop, full of old bottles and big oak cases...it always smelled of Beeswax and Cigars.  The lady that used to clean the shop "had" me while mum got home from work.  If i was really good he used to let me watch him count out the pills.   :)

Mines a Gin and Coke  ( yeah! i know YAK!) and hold the ice.
