My ggg Grandfather was a Census Enumerator
« on: Wednesday 26 October 05 17:47 BST (UK) »
Just browsed through the 1851 census for Beckingham, Nottinghamshire which is now officially on line at Ancestry and noticed 2 things:

- The first entry for the village was my 3xg Grandafther Edmund Stovin with his occupation rather grandly stated as "Schoolmaster & Grocer, Teacher of Reading, Writing & Arithmatic"
- At the end of the last page of the entries for the village after the last entry it says: "End of the Parish of Beckingham and of the Enumeration District.  Edmd Stovin, Enumerator"

I've just realised that I now have 23 pages of my ggg Grandfather's handwriting.  How cool is that?

Anyone else have census enumerators amongst their ancestors?

Oh wow Al!

I'm going to check my school teacher ggggrandfather - and see if he did that!
How wonderful for you! ( can you read the handwriting ? :P :P :P )

That's great!

Don't have a census emumerator but I do have a parish vicar - back in the 17th century, and he had terrible handwriting - I felt like leaving a note in the box which held the film apologising for it

It's better than mine! :P

This guy is the exception among my lot.  His daughter, my gg Grandmother married the local publican's son and we've been following that line rather than the scholarly one ever since  ;D

There is potentially an even more piece of shocking information in this census records:  The Vicar of Beckingham was also called STOVIN.  Surely not a relative of mine :o ??? ;)

Al

I do - apparently - my parents did some research back in the 1970's and I remember them saying that one of the ancestors was the enumerator. Haven't found him yet but I think it was 1851 they were talking about so I'm hoping to find him now!

Cheers Veron

Several of my ancestors could neither read nor write.

It does seem ironic that the only writing some women ever did was to write X   on the marriage register but they were not allowed to practise their X writing skills at election times!
