Can anyone tell me where Lyth is or was in Nth Yorks?
I can't find it on the map but I suspect it may have been near Pickering but has been more or less merged with that town and is no longer separate.

Any help appreciated.

Hallo, Molly

Kelly's 1857 directory gives the following information:

KIRBY MISPERTON, or KIRBY-OVER-CARR, is a township, parish and village, 4 miles south from Pickering, 8 miles north-by-west from Malton, and 9 north-west (sic) from Kirby Moorside, in the North Riding, Pickering Lyth west wapentake, Pickering union, Cleveland archdeaconry, and York archbishopric.

see   http://www.kirbymisperton.org.uk/directories/Kelly1857.html

As far as I understand, Pickering Lyth is the district, but Pickering is the town.  Lythe Beck is a stream which flows into the river Esk.

Hope this helps
Philip

Thanks for that. I've got an ancestor born in Lyth acording to the 1851 census but according to the IGI, it says Pickering.
