Tracing Irish ancestors who moved to England
« on: Friday 28 October 05 14:43 BST (UK) »
Hi

I've come to a complete standstill with my ancestors from Ireland who moved over to England.  All of the English Censuses just state 'Ireland' as their birth places and their names are pretty common, so I'm not sure if anyone can help me trace them back to Ireland?

They are:

William White b.1830 and his wife Ann b.1841.  They had several children as follows:

Michael b.1872
Peter    b.1863

Both born in Ireland.  The family moved over to Cumberland and were living in the Cleator area where they then had more children:

William b.1865
Anne    b.1868
John     b.1870
Patrick  b.1871
Thomas b1874

If anyone can give me any information about them at all I'd be very grateful!
Best Wishes
Kathie

Kathie:
Sometimes in situations like this it helps if there were other Irish who settled in area and if so that can open doors as people would tend to go where they know someone. I did a quick "google" and find that there were quite a lot of Irish who were in that area. The iron mines were the major draw.

Cemeteries may well reveal county origins. If you are in that area, a walk through looking for Irish names might give you some leads.

Here is another where you can see others who are also interested in the Ireland-Cumberland connection.  http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/CUMBERLAND/1998-11

Hope this helps some.

Hi Pat

Thanks very much for the leads, I'll definitely take a look at these websites and see what I can find.  I feel a trip to Cumbria coming on!

Best wishes

If you do visit Cumbria I'd suggest the Whitehaven Records Office that covers Cleator, Cleator Moor (once know as "Little Ireland").

I maybe in there on Wednesday night, I can't promise anything as I have a load of stuff to look for but I have noted it down and if I come across anything I'll get back, but don't hold your breath, I might not go depends on work commitments

Hi,

As the kids were born prior to 1864, you are out of luck on finding them on the birth indexes (unless Peter was born in early 1864? and you calculate his birth year from a census.) So you could try looking for him.

Also what religion were they? If Anglican , thei marriage in ireland should be in the indexes.

These are available at the Dublin GRO (in person or Roscommon by post) or on film at your local family history centre. (Church of the latter day saints) http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp for your nearest.
