« on: Monday 31 October 05 10:12 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the WELCH family, known to be at Mutton Lane, South Mimms in 1851.  The family would be:

James WELCH - husband - age etc. unknown - dead by 1851
Mary - wife - b.1791, Harlington, Bedfordshire.  In 1851 she was a Beer Shop Keeper
Sarah - daughter - 1815
William - son - 1818
Joseph - son - 1820
Georgina - dau - 1825
Mary Ann - dau - 1827
Charles - son - 1831
Elizabeth - dau - 1833 born South Mimms

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thank you in advance

Prue

Wonderful!  Thanks Pam.  I hadn't realised S Mimms had changed counties between 41 and 51.
Cheers!  :)

P.S. Pam, was there an age for James on the 1841?

Ooops sorry - did I miss it out?

James Welch 30 Ag. Labourer.

I was quite surprised to find South Mimms on the Middlesex 1841 too.  Potters Bar & Barnet are there as well which I have always thought were Hertfordshire.

Glad to be of help!
Pam

Hi Prue and Pam

The confusion may have arisen because censuses are organised by Registration District and not county.  The whole of Barnet RD was on the Middlesex return in 51, even though a large proportion of it was geographically in Herts.

However, this part of the Herts/Middlesex border is complex, but I believe that I right in saying that for the most part the parish of South Mimms was in Middlesex until 1965, until it and Potters Bar transferred to Herts. Barnet and Hadley then transferred to Middlesex at this date.

Rick :)
