birth place

how do i go about finding my gt grandads birth place.
All i know abt him is that he was born abt 1877 and his fathers name was james, they were both colliers. david marries a matilda gough(goff) in 1903 in glamorgan (registration district of pontypool). he died in 1950 in aberdare

Have you already tried to find him in the 1881 (or later) census?

i have had a quick look on 1881 census but not knowing where he comes form or his mothers name i am finding it difficult to look for him

Well, I'm afraid I can't see any other possibility. Check everybody with that name and with a father James, trace them forwards to eliminate the ones who are already married in 1901... No other official cert will tell you his birthplace.
