Handley/Drinkwater family of Runcorn
« on: Tuesday 01 November 05 16:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Can anybody please help me as I am having problems tracing the parents of both Thomas Handley(c1825) Runcorn(sailmaker) married Mary Drinkwater(c1827) born Aughton(I believe this to be Haughton)/Astmore. The names came form birth certificate of son Benjamin(born Liverpool 1869). I have been unable to trace marriage certificate and can only assume they married in Runcorn as first child Mary Jane Handley was born Runcorn(c1849). I have tried
1837 and FreeBMD but could find nothing.
Best wishes
Roald

Raol, It is a mystery, the only thing I could find was a Mary Drinkwater marriage in Ashton under Lyne in 1852.  But I couldn't find a link to Thomas Handley in the same year.
Sorry

Hi Kathb
Many thanks for your reply. I am mystified by what has been removed by the moderator?
In the 1851 census Mary and Thomas lived at 66 Guide Lane, Hooly Hill Village. Ashton-under Lynne. Mary Jane Handley(first child) born Runcorn as we know, William Handley(1850 second child) born Manchester. Hooly Hill being part of Manchester. I to found the same record as you with the same results, I have been through all the available IGI' again drawing a blank and I don't know what to do next? Any suggestions?
On a more lighter note in trolling through the IGI's I think I have found more links to the Handley family through John Handley(1780 Runcorn) spouse Ann Hatton(1781 Lower Peover) and the children of that marriage, they seem to link in but yet to be proved.
Well Peover isn't that far so I think it might be worth a trip, that and a trip to the Library at the Shopping City in Runcorn.
By the way do you think it is worth sending for the marriage cert. without the knowing who is Mary Drinkwater's partner?
Many thaks for you reply
Best wishes
Ron

Dear Ron, the moderator quite correctly removed my references to the Census (which you have) because I had not put the crown copyright notice on it.  Stupid me.
I would suggest that you do send for the marriage certificate as I have found in my research that this is the only way to erradicate or confirm details, even when you may have spent some money on a false trail.  I have found a half uncle that I know my mum was not aware had been born before her mother married her dad and other 'skeletons' in the cupboard. I have also found that you must confirm your information with copies of certificates because the transcriber is often wrong.  My husbands great great grandfather has been transcribed variously as Donald, David and his name was actually Daniel.  When you see the actual certificate you can see how this has been so easily wrongly transcribed.  You may find that the reason you cannot find the marriage is because Thomas's surname has been wrongly transcribed and he is listed as Handley, Hanley, Handiley or whatever.
Good Luck
Kathb
