1830 Marriage Records - Alfreton
« on: Tuesday 01 November 05 23:09 GMT (UK) »
My GG Grandparents were from the Alfreton area.  His name was Thomas Slater and his wife's name was Mary but I don't know her surname.  I found several Thomas Slaters in Derbyshire but I think the one who married Mary Tagg in Alfreton on either 25.12.1830 or 18.1 1831 may be the correct one. Is anyone able to look this up and see if it gives any more details.  I think my GG Grandmother's father was William.  The Slaters had three sons born in Derbyshire before they moved to Yorkshire. They were William, born 1832, Alfreton, John, born 1834, Somercotes and Levi, born 1836, Redding. I would be grateful for any information about them if possible

Hi Sylvia

Many thanks but I already have this.  I don't seem able to get any further back.  I thought I'd cracked it when I found out my GG Grandmother had remarried in 1860 and I got a copy of her marriage certificate.  I was hoping it would give her father's name as Tagg but it said he was William Tyke.  I can't find any Tykes in Derbyshire and very few elsewhere!  I noticed that Mary and her new husband both had to "make their mark" on the certificate and wondered if she had said her father was William Tagg and the registrar/vicar had misunderstood her Derbyshire accent (she remarried in Wakefield - not a million miles away but accents would have been broader in those days).  As she couldn't read she may not have realised the mistake.  I was hoping that if anyone had information about Mary Tagg and her family it may tally with what I know about my GG Grandmother.

Thanks anyway!

Jud

Hi Sylvia

Thanks for this and your last post - you're a gem!

Mary gave her age as 40yrs on the 1851 census and, assuming she was born in the latter part of 1810 that would fit perfectly with Mary Tagg's birthday.  In later censuses she gave her age as 49yrs,59yrs and 69yrs which doesn't fit as well but people do get confused as they get older!  The information about William Tagg is great and I have details of other Taggs living near Alfreton which I'll start working on now.

Thanks again

Jud

Hi Sylvia

Many thanks for this latest lot - you're not leaving me much to do!

The Thomas Slater born Greasley is interesting - perhaps he and William Tagg were friends, or even related and that's how my GG Grandparents met.  More likely it's because they were all miners and used to move around as one pit was worked out and another one opened.

Hi Sylvia

You've been very busy again! I was quite intrigued by Thomas the Preacher and how marvellous to be related to "The Father of the American Industrial Revolution"!  I thought it was very unlikely - I'm sure that, even though very little family history has been passed down, someone would have mentioned Thomas and Samuel.  Additionally none of the Slaters I've known have been Methodists, although I noticed that Riddings, where Levi was born, had a Methodist chapel.  I was looking at where people had been Christened noticed that the same names were cropping up and there were lots of Samuels associated with Alfreton albeit 70-80 years after the "American" Samuel was born - there was also a John, Grace and Ann which could be family names.

I noticed that in the last message you had the marriage of Thomas Slater and Mary Tagg in Alfreton on 18 Jan 1831 - was that from the Parish Register?  I ask because IGI has two marriage dates - that one and 25.12.1830.  Both were posted "at a later date by members of the LDS  church" so I wasn't sure which, if either, was correct.

Thanks again for your trouble.

Jud
