1901 / 1911 Census TYRONE - SOME NAMES and notes
« on: Wednesday 02 November 05 11:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi all (I'm so ashamed I was CERTAIN I had posted this before but never mind).

When looking for my Hamiltons in 2000 I wrote some notes about their neighbours in 1901 and 1911 (Urney, Strabane). Please don't hesistate to ask if you want to know more - a lot of the notes are very sketchy (!) but I will do what I can to help you out.

Ger :)

Hi Donal! Here's the low-down (forgive me, these are my notes which I left as-is):

18 April 1911, Urney Road Strabane 134/7

DIVER at number 8 Urney Road

had a fowl-house

Three generations. Eliza, 74, is a Roman Catholic widow and illiterate; her daughter Elizabeth, 28, is an M Factory Machinist (*not sure what the 'M' was!) and can read and write. Eliza's grandchildren are Lizzie, 21, Edward, 12, and Maggie Jane, who is 1 month and cannot read or write yet (!). Does Elizabeth own Edward, or baby Maggie..? Who was away or visiting that night..??

ARBUCKLE, next door to number 7 (my Hamiltons were at number 7!)

James and Mery (sic) Arbuckle could read at 72 and 60 years respectively; James was a "Labourers General" and their son, Patrick, 16, at school. From Donegal originally and a Roman Catholic family.
Good on you Mery - you've filled in your 'occupation' slot as House Keeper, even though it says 'No entry should be made' for home makers. (*Could have been a job rather than her own home).

Hope this is of some use, Donal.
Best of luck!
Ger :)

I stand corrected about Elizabeth. I'm slightly confused here The info I have here in front of me says that on the 31 March 1901. The head of the household was Eliza Diver 60 widowed. She had a daughter living with her called Margerie 24yrs.(both could not read or write). She also had 5 grandchildren there at that time. Eliza 19yrs.(cannot read or write).Mary 15yrs.(read and write).Eliza
10yrs(read and write).Margaret 6yrs (cannot read or write). and Edward 2yrs. I said Edward was my grandfather and I assumed that Margerie was his mother. I know his mother was Diver who never married she had Edward out of wedlock.
Food for thought here would you agree.? :-\

I'd maybe think that the 19yrold Eliza from 1901 was the Elizabeth in 1911 since the dates are close (even though she is a gdaughter in one and daughter in another - could well have been my mistake!).  Lizzie was the 10yrold Eliza (with 3  Elizas in the house there must have been some way of yodelling for one and not having all three come running!). I guess Edward's mum could have been either of the girls - I have a similar situation with my Brit rels. Funny how she has so many grandkids with her, isn't it? Whether they were orphaned or their parents were working... lots of food for thought here!

Hi Jackie

Sadly the only info I have written for James and Katherine Doherty is that they were 70 and 60 years of age, and James was a farm labourer. 1901 (12 April) ref 132 48-53, Ballycolman Lane.

I hope this helps - sorry there wasn't more!
