Advice please - I'm desparate
« on: Wednesday 02 November 05 18:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

I'm trying to find more information on my GG grandmother Alison (Alice?) Telford.  She was botn in Berwickshire in about 1812 and later moved to Sunderland where she married Wilson Orwin in 1833.

In the 1861 census she actually mentions the village where she was born and the daft official managed to put a transcribers mark across it!!

It is a short word and I have noticed from the IGI that there are a number of other Telfords being born to a mother called Alison in Ayton at about the right time, but my Alison is not there.  Scotland's People website also does not list her.

Can anyone tell me how reliable the records for Ayton are?  Is it possible that they are just in bad condition so she hasn't been transcribed?

I know this is a long shot but I'm desperate!!

Thanks

Jos

Hi Jos,

I can only find one A* Telford born in Berwickshire around 1812 in the British Vital Records:

TELLFORD, Agnes
Born 3 Jul 1811
Christened 21 Jul 1811
Eccles, Berwickshire, Scotland
Parents. Robert TELLFORD & Agnes GLASGOW

Thanks for taking the time to check up on that Ann - I hadn't spotted that one in Eccles.  I tend to agree with Sue that the name of the place under the mark does look like Acton or Aiton which could be a misspelling of Ayton.

If anyone can advise regarding the reliability of the registers I'd appreciate it.
