Place names
« on: Thursday 03 November 05 10:45 GMT (UK) »
According to the 1901 census, my great-grandfather is recorded as having been born in Rason, Llanichlaes, Glamorganshire. He was born about 1840.
But I an find NO other reference to these hypothetical places. I am aware that the transcriptions are frequently inaccurate - particularly for Welsh place names - Can anyone throw any light as to where these places are , aand what are their possible real names.
I have tried all possible spellings of Rason, and  for Llanichlaes - Llanidlaes, Llanidloes - which isn't in Glamorganshire, I have looked in gazeteers for Glamorgan - but come up with nothing.

I live in France, so my research has been internet - but I am coming to Wales next week, and will buy ordnance survey maps while there. Will be in Glamorganshire from the wek after., but will have access to the internet.
Sincerely, Rachel Bowen.

hi Rachel, I think with the growth of Glam in the last half of the nineteenth century, there was a local government reorganisation at the end. For example LLanwonno before 1901 covered an immense geographical area and in the 1901 census places like Porth, Treforest and Tonyrefail appear along with some village named after the original developer. It may be easier to look for an OS map prior to 1900. I have also found many error on the transcriptions of the census. I lost a whole group of Norrises who had been entered as Morris.
Hope it helps

Thank you - I'll have to do it tonight as I am at the office now, and my refs are there. I found him yesterday (and on several other occasions) and was not able to pay to view the original record as the 1901 census won't accept my credit card unless I ring up and ask them to do it manually from their office.
That way I could check the original handwriting, as there are many mistakes of transcription as I am sure you are well aware, particularly for Welsh ones, as the transcribers have no knowledge of Welsh or of Welsh place names.
Rachel

Rachel - perhaps you do not need to go to all of that trouble. Just post the details you have and someone here will look him up on the 1901 census and perhaps earlier ones if you wish.
I have many old maps of Wales and will take a look for these places but I must say they do not appear on Genuki so I am not hopeful. 8)
