Baptism Before 1837 in Ilkeston
« on: Thursday 03 November 05 14:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Apologies as I am sure this has been asked many times before.  I have a marriage cert for SAMUEL GILBERT which took place in 1856 in Ilkeston, his age is given as 22.
Father's name is Joseph Gilbert.  Is there any way to find Samuels Baptism?? He was Born in Ilkeston. I would love to know who is mother was.  I know her surname was Taylor.  Also How would i go about finding his parent's marriage??

I have check IGI but no joy.  Any ideas??

Many thanks

Lena

Hi

You need to search the Parish Records for Ilkeston, which are kept at the Records Office at Matlock. There are also a few libraries that keep these records.  The Derbyshire family history society do postal searches for a small fee.

I take it you already have him in the 1851 census, living with grandfather William Taylor? Have you found him the 1841 census?
if not, it might be worth posting a new request.

Meanwhile I found this on the IGI

Joseph Gilbert married Elizabeth Taylor 14 Aug 1824/1825 at Ilkeston

(There are two entries one says 1824 the other 1825)

Hope this helps

Hi Sunflower,

That is great you managed to find the marriage of Samuels parent's, thank you!  :)

Unfortuantly I live in Bristol so can't get to the records office at Matlock  :( but have friends up there who may be willing to do it for me!

I do have the 1851 and 1841 census entries for Samuel

Thanks for the advice!!
