New York passenger list
« on: Friday 04 November 05 05:41 GMT (UK) »
Could I request a  lookup for New York Passenger list 1851 - 1891 for a Robert Gallington born abt 1826 London. Would have wife Anne with him.
Also John Gallington born abt 1816 with wife Sarah and family.

I think John went over in1852 as I believe son Henry was born at sea.

Thanks

Hi,

I didn't find the passenger list you were asking about but I did find a family that fit your description in the 1860 census.

Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut:
Robert Gallington  33  Straw Bleacher  b. Eng.
Anna Gallington   30  b. Eng.

If these are your folks then you will be looking for passenger lists prior to 1860 which are few and far between.  One of my ancestors is said to have crossed 6 times between 1838 and 1870 but he does not appear on any list I have found yet.

Susan
Russell in London,
Gladwin in Beeston, Bradford, W. Yorkshire,
Rosser in London and Glamorganshire,
Goddard in Bishopstone, N. Wiltshire
Sandiford in London area circa 1770
Smirk(e) in London
Stradling in Glamorganshire
Mansel or Mansell in Glamorganshire
Carne in Glamorganshire

It does seem difficult to find these immigration records but thanks for looking.
It would appear you have the right Robert in the 1860 census. While you have the 1860 census, could you check out John Gallington born 1816 but possibly living in Rhode Island.

Robert went back to England in about 1870 but of course may have travelled back and forth as well. Amazing how they managed in the tiny sailing ships but they had no choice of course.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for the great response. Such a wealth of information which I really appreciate and cannow sort out this side of my family tree.
T
The immigration information is most helpful. Any sign of brother John who came outin about 1852 ?

Just a question to Ohio Susan, you have Sarah C Gallington listed as dead in 1878 age 26, my previous information had her married at 1859 to Henry Whalley and born 1840 in England. The surrounding information ie parents is correct. Also I had her married again in 1874 to Albert P Rodgers and they both appear in the 1880 census.  Not many Gallingtons and why listed as Gallington when married ?? Could you check the age at death again. I have been in contact with her descendants through the Rodger line and they had her dead in 1878 so unsure why she is showing in 1880 as quite alive.  Any ideas.

Thanks again for sll the information

Susan41 had the cemetery listings - perhaps she is a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and may be able to clarify.

My information came from Ancestry.com
Rhode Island Deaths, 1630-1930

Description:
One of the smallest states in the Union, Rhode Island was also one of the earliest settlements in British North America. This database is a collection of death records between 1636 and 1930. Each record provides the decedent's name, death date, relatives, and age. Taken from existing copies of the original records, this can be a useful source of detailed information.

Extended Description:
Providence Births 1636-1920, Providence Marriages 1851-1920, Providence Deaths 1636-1930, Bristol County - Barrington, Bristol, and Warren, Kent County - Coventry, East Greenwich, Warwick, and West Greenwich, Washington County - Charlestown, Exeter, Hopkinton, North Kingstown, Richmond, South Kingstown, and Westerly.

But no other information.

FamilySearch shows this:
SARAH E. GALLINGTON
Marriages:
  Spouse:  HENRY WHALLEY  Family
Marriage:  24 DEC 1859   Providence, Providence, Rhode Island

SARAH ELIZABETH GALLINGTON
Marriages:
  Spouse:  ALBERT P. ROGERS  Family
Marriage:  30 OCT 1874   North Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island

It looks like there may be 2 Sarahs ???
