1861 census

Please help!

I thought I would make great progress once my Surname Index booklets arrived for the 1861 census in Bradford.

I have identified the surnames I have been looking for which have the Piece No and the Folio No.  But what next?

Do I need to quote these numbers when requesting a look up from some kind person who holds a copy of the 1861 Census, as I have found info about the 1871 and 1901 census.  I'm not sure what to do with this new information.

You'll notice that I've posted this one on Beginners, where it belongs.

Could I also ask if someone could explain 'strays' I guess it relates to people born in one area but living in another at the time of the census.  Maybe you have a FAQ bit that I haven't found yet.

Don't know what I'd do without this site, everyone is so helpful and I don't feel so daft asking questions like the ones above with you lot.

Cheers

Hi Val,

I have been away,  so excuse my delay in replying.   ;D

It would be a great help to quote these piece and folio details when requesting a lookup,  as often these earlier censuses have not been cross-referenced or indexed yet.

Post requests in our county lookups boards and if we can help we will.  It is always a good idea to post as much detail as you can about the family you are looking for,  another census entry is usually very helpful.

Strays are people who appear on census records outside the county they were born in.  Some researchers collect the records and make databases of them to help when you get a wandering ancestor.  Mine wander all over the place so these are often useful.   8)

These are not daft questions,  and anyway answering daft questions is my chosen specialist subject,  they are the only ones I can cope with.  ;D

Hey Val,

I have one saying which should be carried about by all.  The only dumb question is the one that you don't ask.  Remember if you don't know the only way to find out is ask.  Some may think what a dumb blonde she or he must be ( no disrespect to blondes) but all in all they had to start somewhere once before and they themselves may not have known something far easier to work out.

So rather than looking a fool by not asking and then stating somehting wildly inaccurate ask those questions and I am sure one or the other of us on here will have the answer.  If not one or the other then Kaz lol

Hi there,

thanks for the support, I'll keep on sending the daft questions then without any fear of embarassment. :-[
