Now we're getting somewhere! I'll order the certificates so we can perhaps track the various ladies in the picture. As for the brothers, we are beginning to get a picture, and certainly lots of names my parents and grandparents never recalled in my presence. However it's good to see where that might lead. I'm still intrigued by the coal mining bit though and despite my best efforts I'm stumped for the moment. I do understand that somewhere along the line the Mosley family were among the first in Chesterfield to own motor cars, and it is believed within the family that whatever they had gained through the mine business, was subsequently lost through a love of cars! I guess its time to try harder on the mine front and to follow the various new families where possible. Many thanks again Tricia, I think I owe you one (or probably several!)

I think you may have to approach some organisation or other in Derbyshire re the mining.  Maybe the Mosley brothers who owned the colliery were brothers of Joseph Mosley Senior. Only John and Charles seemed involved in coal mining and Charles left the area eventually.

Good Luck

We will meet again, no doubt

As promised... more questions arising from this thread, and I've not finished analysing the information already given!

Does anyone have Joseph Mosley born C1824 in the 1841 census? Interesting to find his parents perhaps?

In 1861 census, Josephs children Charles and George are not shown at home, is there any way to find where they may have been?

1881 census for Joseph shows his son George living at home with wife Mary, and a granddaughter, Annie, aged 2... However 1891 Census shows John Mosley, married to Sarah, with a daughter, Annie aged 12!! Are these the same Annie??

How can anyone fail to be addicted to Genealogy? Awaiting certificates to confirm mothers maiden names.

best wishes to all, Martin

Hi, Martin

As this is quite a long thread if you don't get a response for 1841 it may be better to post a seperate request

I'll have a look at the other stuff for you.

Tricia :)

I'm really rubbish at this for 2 reasons:-

1. Not noticing there were 2 images for 1861
2. Not noticing the absence of the 2 brothers.

OF COURSE, they were at home. I'm so sorry

MEA CULPA :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Right - we didn't do John and family in 1881 so here he is

1881 census

Hallowes Lane

John Mosley Head age 28 Coal miner born Dronfield
Sarah wife age 26 born Manchester
Annie dau age 2 born Dronfield
Walter son age 6 months born Dronfield

 RG11/3444  Chesterfield Dronfield Folio 80 Page 8

So there are 2 granddaughters called Annie both the same age.

Now comes the strange bit - on 1881 one of these Annie's,as you say, is with grandad Joseph, wife, George and wife Emma.

I have not been able to trace George in 1891 but have found this family - which doesn't make sense to me unless George was George William. The writing on both the images is quite clear

1891 census

William Mosley Head age 28 Coal miner Dronfield
Emma wife age 30 born Lincoln
Annie M dau age 11 born Dronfield
Mary E dau age 4 born Rotherham Yorkshire
Ellen Tabram Niece age 8 born Rotston Yorkshire

RG12/3762 Pontefract Castleford Folio 14 Page 21

Now we have this marriage

GOODWIN, Emma
Mosley, George
Quarter ending December 1880
Chesterfield
7b
1111
This fits in with the 1881 image.

This William is not the same as the William married to Elizabeth as he still appears in his family unit in 1891 and 1901.

Bit of thinking to do here.

Are George Mosley and William Mosley above the same person?
Maybe the birth cert for George will reveal a second name.
Maybe the birth cert for Mary E will reveal a different father.

To add to the problem there is a death for a George Mosley Quarter ending  June 1883 Chesterfield 7b 429. His age at death was 24 which gives birth year of 1859!!

I'll leave you to have a think because my head is spinning at the moment.  Let me know if I can try and find any certs for you which might help.

This is the 1901 census for Emma and William

51 Potley Street

William Mosley Head age 38 Coal miner born Dronfield
Emma Wife age 40 born Lincoln
Nellie, dau, age 14 born Rothwell Yorkshire

RG13/4301 Pontefract Castleford Folio 9 Page 9

Despite name and birth place suspect Mary E and Nellie are one and the same.
