What is the place on your 96 year old cousin's birth certificate?

By the way - sorry for missing you in the chat room earlier.

I've had a look on www.streetmap.co.uk for Hermitage and there are three places in North Yorkshire actually called Hermitage.  Probably all of them had a hall at some point?

They are 5km West of Whitby, 10 Km West of Whitby and 5 Km South of Malton.  Was your cousin born anywhere near these places?

Hi

maybe it should be KIRKLEES HALL which was owned by the infamous ARMYTAGE FAMILY for many years.

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Lane/8771/kirklees.html

Take a look at the site above.  Also have a look at Malcolm Bull's Trivia pages about the above family you never know.  they were big land owners.

You know just in case they ahve got the name mixed up

Hi Ticker and Wendy,
Ticker my Cousin was born in Cardiff, and so was her father I have already explored that avenue, that is why I have resorted to this wonderful site with so many helpful people hoping I can glean some information that will help me over this brickwall that I have been up against for some considerable time.
Thank you Wendy I shall have a look at the site that you suggest see what it may turn up,

thank you once again, most appreciated

I found an image of the Hermitage near Whitby. That is no Hall - just what one would expect a single room dwelling. There were innumerable religious anchorites or hermits in the middle ages plus a number of mentally sub-normal people abandoned by their families, living in woods, in caves, in makeshift huts. Almost every village had a hermit. All lived in tiny dwellings, some not better than lean-tos. Armitage is certainly a name that has its roots in Yorkshire.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

What about Armitage Bridge House? Reputedly, Armitage Bridge, in the Holme Valley near Huddersfield, is the place we're all named after. I believe the name comes from the fact that there was a real hermitage there in the Middle Ages.

There have been a number of Armitages in the Almondbury area with quite posh sounding addresses. Try some trades directories.

Sorry I don't know any more, but my branch of the family has lived in Leeds for at least 150 years.
