Hello Ewan,
Thanks for all your info. William son of Henry & Charlotte is not my William but I am hoping that the other William [the Lodger on the '61] is. Its a long story and a BIG brickwall!!
The William Newman I am researching puts his place of birth as Cricklade on 4 census returns [1871 Middlesex, '81, '91 and 1901 in Pyrford Surrey] born approx 1844/48. He was married 8/1/1870 to Elizabeth Curtis at Christchurch Brixton Rd Kennington, Surrey. His Banns were called at St Mary Magdalene Church in Littleton Middlesex. On his marriage certificate he gives his fathers name as Joseph and his fathers occupation as a Shepherd. I have not been able to trace him on the 1851 in the Cricklade area and can't find a baptism for him in either Cricklade St Mary or Cricklade St Sampson parish registers and I can't locate a Birth Certificate for him. When the '61 census was published on Ancestry.Com and 2 William Newman's appeared in Highworth I thought that I had found him but as he is a lodger in the household I still can't connect him to anyone!! but his is the right age, in approx the right area doing the right job [Ag. Lab on his marriage certificate]. It is only on the '61 that 2 Williams are recorded in Highworth. I can't find one in Middlesex on the '61 that fits all the criteria. On the Wilts '51 the only possibility is the William from the workhouse at Calne but here again I can't really find a connection to my William. One interesting thing is that there was a Mary Newman aged 20 on the Highworth 1841 census return a Servant in the household of Thos. Smith Yeoman of Parsonage Farm and William the lodger turns up on the '61 living if not on then a few schedule's down from Pasonage Farm. Interesting.......... Mistyrose
