Hello Pam,

Michael was sentenced in Fermoy, but I think he came from Rathcormac, a small village to the south of Fermoy. That was where he was arrested trying to sell the sheep he took.

Hello Roleystone,

Thank you for the information. Could I please ask as to where you got your information from.? My father's mother ( my grandmother) was Elanor Cotter. I am going to Ireland in October, so this information is very useful. Thank you again.

Regards,

Pam

Hi Pam,

Your 3rd cousin in Sydney sent it to me, from "The Constitution: Or Cork Advertiser" 17th August 1830

"Michael Cotter was indicted for stealing a sheep, the property of Wm. Hennessy. The sheep was stolen off the prosecutor's land on the night of the 20th May, and on the following day it was found in the prisoner's possession at Rathcormac, where he was offering it for sale to a butcher. Guilty - not sentenced".

I've got his arrival in Australia on the 29th April, 1831 on-board the "Jane 1".

Hello Sio
I am descended from Michael Cotter who came out to Australia in 1830.

It seems likely he was from the Rathcormac area, (possibly from the townland of  Coolnakilla) as he stole a sheep from
a William Hennessy - who was the Prosecutor.  It was mentioned in the Cork Advertiser, 20th May 1830.

On his death certificate it gives his father as James Cotter.

Can you enlighten me at all, as to his descendents.
Many thanks,
Rannia

Hi,
I have done no more on my Cotters since this thread started - still on the New Year's resolutions list!! Coolnakilla sounds vaguely familiar. One of these days I will go to Rathcormac and take down the names off the gravestones. The Old Church of Ireland in Rathcormac, which unusually has both Church of Irelland and Catholic graves  is still in use today, despite the church having sadly gone to rack and ruin.
