Ancestry Bloopers!
« on: Monday 07 November 05 09:45 GMT (UK) »
If you are looking for a surname that starts with 'T' then substitute 'F' instead.
There are oodles of FHORNS and FHORPS and FHOMLINSONS out there.
Just take a look ............. I found many of mine that I could not find elsewhere.
I suppose the reverse would apply if you were looking for names like FINCH or FOSTER  ........... they might show up as TINCH and TOSTER.
Try it ........... good fun.

Another one to watch out for is 'Y' being transcribed as 'G'. I have had several instances of my Yardleys being listed as Gardleys.

Happy hunting!

Barlows often turn up as Barton's, Dare's as Dan's & Dane's but the best (or worst) i've seen was IRVING transcribed into JEOING.

Bit of a shocker that.
CHURCH & LUSHER (Peterborough) BARLOW, THOMPSON, PARKINSON (Hunts/Cambs)
GIBBONS, STEWART, WILLIAMS (Liverpool) DARE (Liverpool & Jersey)

I have found GILBYs turing up as GIBBYs and GILLYs. The ultimate (for me) was the forename Araisbida (listed as a sibling of my g-g grandmother. I puzzled over that one for ages, then I realised it was her brother, Archibald.
GILBY - Essex, Warwickshire and Cambridgeshire
OWENS - Yorkshire (West Riding) and Ireland
PUGH - Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire, and Nottinghamshire
RYLANDS - Liverpool and Ireland
