Cheshire Geography
« on: Monday 07 November 05 19:29 GMT (UK) »
My Great great great great grandfather Thomas Barrow is listed in the 1851 Denbighshire census as living in Broughton, Denbighshire.   The record lists that he was born in Christington, Cheshire in about 1776.   Can anyone tell me where Christington, Cheshire is located?   I have looked in the Cheshire GENUK, but Christington is not listed in their tabulation of villages and parishes.   Might Christington be located close to the Cheshire/Denbighshire border?

Thank you for your help in advance
Many thanks,
Bob Croman

When i asked for Christington it came up with the Black Museum in Dudley ;D

Peter,

Many thanks for your efforts.   I will have to try and find a map of Cheshire and see how close Christleton might be to the Cheshire-Denbighshire border.
I work as a physics teacher in a public school north of Dallas Tx and unfortunately our computer filters the 19th century map that Genuk has of Cheshire and the surrounding counties.   But maybe I will Google Christleton and gain some additional info.

Again many thanks for your efforts.

Best regards,
Bob Croman

Robert, I suggest that you visit streetmap.co.uk and type in Christleton, denote as a place and  you can then move out to see how near it is to the Welsh border.  You also need to move the pointer west as there are place names very similar to those that you have stated.
I am no expert at this but some of the information I have picked up off the web states Cheshire, Flintshire, as one district.  I do not know if they were linked in the past.

Kathb

Dear Kathb,

Thanks for the info and suggestion.   In poking around with Free BMD, I have discovered that the district known as Great Broughton included parts of Cheshire, Flintshire and Denbighshire.   There were a good number of small communities listed for this Great Broughton, one of which was Christleton.   So it appears as though it would be easy for a young man to migrate from Cheshire into Denbighshire as I am assuming my GGGGgrandfather, Thomas Barrow, must have done.
I just got his death registration and he was reported as dying in Broughton, Denbigh, in 1856 at the age of 81 and his occupation was listed as almsman formerly agricultural laborer.    I imagine that almsman means that in his old age he ended up as one of the many poor.   Needless to say life could be hard back in the 1850's.   In attendance was another Thomas Barrow, whom I assume to be a son.   In the 1851 census this younger Thomas Barrow was about 10-15 entries away from the elder Thomas Barrow.

Again many thanks for your interest and kindness.

Best regards,
Bob Croman
