Birth
« on: Tuesday 08 November 05 00:45 GMT (UK) »
Looking for birth of John SCOTT.
I have his marriage to Helen Gray at St Cuthberts Edinburgh April 18th. 1842.
His death in Edinburgh 1880.  His occupation was Baker.
He had two sons,  John and Gilbert.
This is my brick wall and I would appreciate any assistance.
Thanks,  Bob.

To maidmarianoops,
Can we be sure that the James Scott and Elizabeth Fairbairn are the parents of
John Scott who married Helen Gray in April 18th. 1842 ?.  If not, how can we find the parents?

His death in Edinburgh 1880.

Probably a stupid question, Bob, but did you get John Scott's death certificate?  Should have parents' names ???  Or....did the death certificate have no parents' names included ???

No. I don,t have the death certificate.  Would this be guaranteed to have his birth date and parents names ?.  And from where would this be available?.
Regards, Bob.

Hi Bob,

You can download the death cert from the site given by dkmcad - ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

IF the informant knew the information, the death certificate should have John's age, the name and occupation of his father, and the name and maiden surname of his mother.

There is information about the contents of certificates on the ScotlandsPeople site.

Another good source of information about research in Scotland is in the posts at the top of the Scotland-General board.  Especially a couple of posts by Boongie Pam at:

The 1841 census you sent with John, Andrew and David.  What was the address and parents names, occupations etc. These are all family names and John's occupation of baker also fits.
Regards,  Bob.
