The 1881 name is definitely written "Desse" but that doesn't prove anything I guess.  The place he is boarding at is a school, and he is a student there along with several others, but no other Rhodes  :(

I'll check 1871 now.

In 1881, Jesse's parents and siblings have moved to Lewisham.  The other boys are at home as scholars, or working for dad...wonder why Jesse was sent away to school?  Is the Jesse in 1881 the right Jesse?

Just some thoughts to add a bit of excitement to the hunt  ;D

Here we are:

1871 Greenwich RG10/700
Folio 10, Page 14
Greenwich East, Hospital Ward

5 & 6 Queen's Terrace

George Rhodes, Head, Mar, 38, Grocer & Milkman, b. Staffordshire Cannock
Susannah do, Wife, Mar, 34, b. Herefordshire Kingstone
George do, Son, 11, Scholar, b. Kent Greenwich
William do, Son, 6, Scholar, b. Kent Greenwich
Jesse do, Son, 4, b. Kent Greenwich
Sarah Heasman, Servant, Unm, 20, Shop Servant, b. Kent Greenwich
Sarah Cox, Servant, Unm, 40, Domestic Servant, b. London Hackney

1841 Cannock Staffs  HO107/073/9
Folio 13, Page 21
Township Leacroft

Mill Green

William Rhodes, 40, Gardener
Hannah do, 30
Ann do, 12
George do, 8
William do, 7
Ezra do, 5
Israel do, 3
Jesse do, 1

All, apart from William Snr. born in Staffs.

There was also a 20-year-old Jesse Rhodes in Halmer End, Audley, Staffs (relation?)

Probably only of passing interest are these two chaps:

In Greenwich East (Newcastle St) in 1871 was a Henry Allen, 37, Labourer, born London.  Wife and children all born in Ispwich, Suffolk.  In Greenwich West (Crooms Hill) in 1871 was a Henry Allen, 40, a miniature painter born in Lambeth, Surrey, living with his sister Eliza, a photograph colourer.  How different could these two families be?

I couldn't find any Hallburys in 1871.

I've found 3 year-old Harriet Allen in 1871 Croydon, if of interest (father was a carpenter from Aberdeen).

Wow thanks you guys! I knew I could count on you!!!

This is getting very interesting as I was puzzling over the Jesse Rhodes from Rochdale and thinking he didn't add up really. So definitely the whole Hallbury/Rhodes/Allen thing seems to be the right road! This really is great. Still all very puzzling when people have to faff about changing names every five minutes! I'm so glad none of this is in my tree...lol

Any more info discovered would be great. I'll keep looking now with this info too.

Thanks again everyone!!

And yeah I found Miss Violet Hallbury on the 1915 post directory and was beginning to look for her and off couse, no Hallbury, so thanks for the info on that too. According to my family friend the informant on the death certificate was one C Rhodes, daughter. And her sister reckons that he was indeed an old white haired man and had something to do with shops and retail etc and they once lived above his shop. So this is all tying up pretty well now!

Big thanks again to everyone!
