To maidmarianoops,
                                   Can we be sure that the James Scott and Elizabeth Fairbairn are the parents of  John Scott who married Helen Gray in April 18th. 1842 ?.  If not, how can we find the parents?

Hya Maidmarionoops, try looking for a death certificate for John Scott and Helen Gray. If they died after 1855 in Scotland then the DC will or should have the parents names and occupation.
