I shall add further info now (as time permits):
William GODDARD: As of 27th October 1848 was living at Jenner Corner in
the Parish of Westbury and on that day had 3 fowls, a duck, a sack
and a spade stolen by my ggggf.
William DAVIS: As of 27th October 1848 was living at Dilton's Marsh, Westbury
and working as a carpenter for Mr GODDARD
Stephen MILLETT: Was a Constable at the above stated time and was living in
Roade, Somerset and was the arresting officer of my ggggf.
Henry PACKER, Alfred COCKSELL, John LUCAS and my ggggf Henry OFFER, on
the night of 26th October 1848 were drinking at the Road Bell Inn and
were accosted soon after 4am on the morning of the 27th after
committing the offence. PACKER & COCKSELL were caught with the
stolen property and LUCAS & OFFER made run for it and got away.
James HUNTLEY: Another Constable that was on duty with MILLETT on the
night.
GODDARD, DAVIS & MILLETT all testified in Frome, Somerset against LUCAS and
OFFER. PACKER & COCKSELL got off without sentence. LUCAS was
sentenced to 4 months hard labour in the New Devizes Prison. OFFER
was sentenced to 7 years Transportation to the Australian Colony.
