WW1 RNVR Rank?
« on: Thursday 10 November 05 14:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

The pic below is of my father, Evan Douglas Wilson (1896-1957), during WW1.

Does anyone recognise his rank, etc at the time of the photo?

He & his brothers all died when we were young children, & so I have no-one to ask.

Cheers, Romilly.

It could possibly be the Volunteer Reserve as my great uncle was in this in WW2 (RAF).

Hi there,

Yes, I know that it was the Royal Navy Reserve...I just don't know what rank the uniform signifies...

Midshipman possibly? Anyone know?

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hi Mack,

Thanks for the info...much appreciated :)

I've managed to trace my father's time in the Merchant Navy, (1912-1916 with the Taylor & Sanderson Steam Shipping Company), but his time in the RNVR remains a mystery - although I know that he was badly wounded at the Battle of Jutland.

I've gone round & round in circles on the National Archives site trying to trace any RNVR records for him :( I thought that it might help if I had some idea of rank to put into the search engine.

Thanks again,
All Best Wishes, Romilly.

Further to my previous message...

After locating my late father on the WW1 Medal Roll at Kew...I now know that he was a Sub Lieutenant...& assume that his uniform in the photo signifies that.

Romilly.

perhaps he was promoted later - a sub lieutenant would have only one band rather than the two he has.
Jones, Mantle; Radnorshire
Russell, Stonehouse, Agar; Yorkshire/Durham
Brown, Fair; Durham,
Little, Cumberland
Morris, Woolley, Owens; Montgomeryshire.

I didn't know that...!!

Does anyone know what comes after Sub-Lieutenant?

Cheers, Romilly.
