Joseph Thorniley - New Mills
« on: Friday 11 November 05 18:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have traced an ancestor of mine named, Joseph Thorniley, through the 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881  censuses,  Each time he stated he was born in Derbyshire and in 3 of them named New Mills as his place of birth. In the other he said he was born in Peak Forest. Even though I live in Derbyshire and know where Peak Forest is I think he was possibly referring to the part of New Mills where the  Peak Forest canal had just been built.

My problem is that I can't seem to trace him or his family in New Mills and wondered if anyone could help?

His trade was always that of labourer so there are no clues there.

I cant find anything on the IGI and am unsure where I can go next.

Any help / suggestions would be gratefully received.

Regards

Jean Sandra

It looks to me as though it will be  a question of trawling the Mellor and/or Hayfield parish records, and possibly the non-conformist ones too if the C of E records show nothing  >:(
As you say Joseph is not showing in the IGI and neither is the Samuel born New Mills 1804 (1851 census) who must surely be related to him?
Hopefully someone else will be able to help you out :)

Hi,

many thanks for replying.

I don't like to ask but who is  Samuel Thorniley?

Do you have his details?

here is the 1851 entry for Samuel. He is at Heaton Norris too and born New Mills so I think it likely that he is related to your Joseph. Judging by the children he spent some time in Stockport and seems to have been there in 1841 so you could try looking for Joseph there too perhaps.

Here is a link to the 1841 census for New Mills. There is a Thorneley family there so that might interest you.

This is where I found the previous link.

The 1881 has a Sarah Thornely aged 68 a grocer at Mellor. In 1851 she is living with her mother:

Good luck with this lot ;D

Hi,

many thanks for this.

Until now I was unaware of Samuel but now I can see he probably is a brother of Joseph.

I have tried on a nu,mber of occasions to find Joseph in the 1841 census but without success.

I appreciate all your help, its wonderful.

Regards

Jean Sandra

Hi,

thank you so much for your help.

My problem is that Joseph Thorneley was born about 1812 and I can't find a baptism or record of him prior to 1851 in Heaton Norris.

The subsequent records of him are all in Heaton Norris, so I don't know who his family in New Mills were. I just know that various censuses have him down as being born in New Mills about 1812.

The earliest record of him is in the 1851 census when he was 38 years old.

Regards

Have you tried looking under THORNHILL, THORNHILE, THORNIWELL, THORNELLY.?
My THORNHILL's(from Derbys) have at times used all those variations-I know some of my GGrandfathers brothers-baptised as THORNHILL, married as THORNELLY, and their living descendants use the name THORNLEY -one even uses THORLEY!!!
Thornhill, Cresswell, Sisson, Harriman, Cripps, Eyre, Walter, Marson, Battison, Holmes, Bailey, Hardman, Fairhurst Noon-mainly in Derbys/Notts-but also Northampton, Oxford, Leics, Lancs-England
