Hi Ruth

I borrowed a book from the local library to check something for another rootschatter and it's on the Shire of Bannockburn.

Bannockburn takes in Fyansford and surrounding areas, the Wilks family are
mentioned in it.

Says Joseph & James established a smithy & wheelwright shop in the late 1840's.   So, maybe James arrived before Joseph.

Joseph Wilks (1823-1876) married Ann Colverd in 1847 and migrated to Australia in 1855.
I have them as having 10 children.
Ann died in 1870.
Their daughter Caroline Ann Wilks died in 1874

Does anyone know if the Geelong/Ballarat WILKS had origins in Worcestershire? I have a Joseph WILKS there who had a son Richard born 1800 in Hallow, Worcs.

Thanks Timbo42.  Can't help feeling there could be a connection somehow. But …

re the Dunmow Flitch Hotel, see https://ballaratpubs.miraheze.org/wiki/Dunmow_Flitch_and_Bacon_Hotel

James Wilks was down for a licence hearing for the Dunmow Flitch Hotel in Ballarat in 1858 (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/66049342) and a licence was reported as granted to him in 1859.  In 1860 John Hamilton took over the licence.
