 Hi Mary, I think it too would be a question as to which family you were looking for as there were many Shergold families in the villages surrounding Downton and also in the town itself as far as my memory serves me. When i went to Downton looking for gravestones there were  stones in St Lawrences Churchyard with the surname of Shergold and i have come to the conclusion that they were a very large local family, and didnt seem to venture to far from these places, similar to my own family of Mussellwhite, of whom there are many families still living in Downton Today.

thanks for the reply. i am looking to trace the roots of harry shergold born  c1863 he married fanny virtue batten c1884.they lived in redlynch wilts.

Looked on the 1851 and found Fanny's father FRANCIS at home with his parents, quite lucky really don't often find a 27 year old man with his parents
