newbie question about resources
« on: Sunday 13 November 05 09:26 GMT (UK) »
I have recently found an Irish branch in my tree.
My questions are
Is there a BMD site similar to the English version for Ireland ?
Is there a census site for Ireland similar to Ancestry ?
I feel like I have hit a brickwall in my research, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Caroline

Welcome to the irish brick maze club  :D

Unfortunately the Irish records are not yet online .. have a look at http://www.groireland.ie/  for more information - although they do accept postal applications for certificates.

The GRO in Dublin holds all irish records (north & south) up to December 1921 and after that they seperate into the two areas we know today Dublin for the south and Belfast for the North.

Census ..... census records are pretty thin on the ground as much of the official records were destroyed in a series of events ... if your relative owned land there is a possibility they may be in Griffiths evaluation index

also have a look at moscan's post at click here

Hello Caroline,

I had a look in http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm for the surname Fluke and found during the period of Griffiths Valuation in Ireland (1848-64) there were three families by the name in Co. Armagh and two families by the name in the neighbouring county of Monaghan. There were 63 families named Wiggin in Ireland with Co. Monaghan coming in second place with 11 families. The names Patton and Pogue may mean you have your work cut out for you. There were 41 Pogue and 290 Patton families.

If your families were in Ireland at the time of the Valuations then you may find this site is helpful http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php as it may enable you to find the townlands in which they were living.

During what period were the families that you are researching living in Ireland ?

Regards, Christopher
