I have been looking for a death listing for Henry Ernst August LEOPOLD (aka “Fritz”), who, as I was told by a family member, died in 1929.  I can't find him at 1837online.  I would expect he would have died in Walthamstow (is that West Ham?), but I really don't know, as people can die anywhere.  He must be out there somewhere.  Any clues most welcome.  He would have been in the range of 68 years, and had been a hairdresser.

thank you

Loo,

A couple of things occur to me:

1.  Could your family member have been wrong about his year of death?  Is there any way of cross checking this?  I know it is very hard to do a broad search on 1837online, and of course freebmd doesn't go up to the year you want.

2.  Could he have died outside England?  He has a German name - don't suppose he could have gone to Germany for any reason?  Or emigrated?  Are there any clues in his background which might suggest where he may have gone?

I think he "should" be there on 1837online if he died in England in the year you suggest, but as we know, nothing is for sure in family history!

Good luck!

If you found the death cert of Charlotte, his wife,it would tell you if she was "wife" or "widow" of..........and may help to narrow down Henry's date of death.

It would also give you an address(hopefully  ;)) and then you could possibly get the local library to look up electoral rolls of the time to see when Henry ceased to live there.

I did that with my great grandparents and found that he lived at the same address for a further 10 years after she died.Narrowing down my serach for his death records.Which was almost 10 years to the day after gt grandma died.

Good luck,

Carol

Hi Loo,
Do you have access to Ancestry.com?  I've run several problems like this through their BDM search facilities and I've been very fortunate...I go into 'Exact' and drop the menu in the top right hand corner down to 'Soundex'

If you don't have it let me know and I'll give it a whirl.

Thanks, Rog.  I don't have easy access to Ancestry.  I have to go to the library for it, to save money, and I can't alway get on to the computers there when I do go.  I'm not confident that I could do the search you are suggesting, as I seem to do better just with censuses.  So, please, have a go if you will.

Carol, that's an interesting suggestion you made.  Have you found that the local libraries will look up things on electoral rolls for you by email?  Do all libraries have these?  This is a problem of living abroad, not knowing what you can get.

Hi Loo

I google search for electoral rolls and the area I want.

Having found a possible library/record office that holds them,I email and ask for a couple of years look up.

They can only say no!!! Mention you are living abroad, and unable to call in person.Don't be too cheeky asking for too much, but often you'll be pleasantly surprised if they come up with a few more years than you requested.

Well that's been my experience anyway............and as I always told my kids
"if you don't ask-you won't get"  ;D

So try it and see...........good luck.
