Hi Loo

You could look up http://www.historicaldirectories.org/
This has the trade directories for various years and counties in UK and is free to search, run by Uni of Leicester.  In pdf format.  You may find your haridresser and then what year he disappears in order to narrow down his death.

Thanks, John.  I had already been there, though, and did not find anything useful to this particular quest.

Apparently there are no deaths for either one of them at 1837online anywhere near the dates in question.
The plot thickens...!

Hi Loo

I google search for electoral rolls and the area I want.

Having found a possible library/record office that holds them,I email and ask for a couple of years look up.

They can only say no!!! Mention you are living abroad, and unable to call in person.Don't be too cheeky asking for too much, but often you'll be pleasantly surprised if they come up with a few more years than you requested.

Carol

Hi Carol,

I'm amazed to hear that you've managed to get free look-ups on Electoral Rolls!

I contacted LB Ealing recently, because I wanted one Look-up & got this reply:

"We can search the register for you and provide the results in writing but there is a minumum charge of £11 for one year (preceding 1998) and £13 for 2-4 years seached".

I decided to leave it...& tackled it from another direction altogether!!

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hello Romiley

I have had great help a few times from libraries who will usually look up one or two years for you. Yes okay some say pay up or else..... ::)

In particular one - not that far from Ealing in fact(won't mention it incase anyone gets into trouble  ;D)

He took my details and said he'd ring me back.Never thought he would.
But within the hour-not only had he done what I'd asked but carried on beyond the war giving me the kids names and luckily the daughter was now married and living there with new hubby.

So I got a good idea of death dates and marriage dates all thanks to one lovely man at a library in Middx. ;D

I, too, have had mixed results with libraries.  Some in the UK haven't answered me, or have promised to do a search and have not done so.  One did some lovely research, more than I asked, and emailed it to me.

I must put in a plug for Australian libraries here, though!  Every one that I have contacted has done research, often more than I asked, and emailed or posted the results to me, quite free of charge.  I am just awaiting the arrival of my latest research request, which should be quite enlightening about one of my ggrandfathers!

If any Oz librarians are reading this - goodonya, you are the greatest!!!!

I found him -- and his wife.  The dates were off a bit, and I had mislaid some of my previous research. :-[  Thanks for all your ideas.
