1851 Census Lookup - Barry Parish, Village of Carnoustie-HERD/HIRD
« on: Monday 14 November 05 00:16 GMT (UK) »
Regards All  :)

I could use a hand up if someone has access to the 1851 Census.

Looking for Archibald Herd/Hird age 50
wife Elizabeth age 65
Daughters Magaret & Elizabeth

Have them on the 1841 & 1861...but I need to see if their daughter Elizabeth is in the home in 1851 and any little clues that might exist!

I'd so appreciate the help  ;)

Hope you don't mind me jumping in on this thread.

Great find, Jean P.

I too have been having trouble with an 1851 Angus Census search. I have the family on 1841 and 1861 etc, but they are 'lost' somewhere on 1851. Have tried (and others have too) numerous variations of surname but to no avail. Maybe a fresh pair of eyes, if it's not too much trouble, would help.

Details are William (age about 40) and Elisabeth/Betsy Youngson (40) with children Isobel (15),  David (12) and John (under 10yrs).  At 1841 they were in Long Wynd, but may have moved before 1851, although I would suspect still Dundee as 1861 records etc all Dundee.

I can only get 17 people on the search I do for Angus and although there is a William and a Betsy, they are not from above group.

Much appreciated.

THANK JEAN

And good luck scotmum!  Obviously there are issues with the spelling of surnames on the 1851 in Angus!!   :P

I had paid at Scotlandspeople quite a few credits looking for this family as I knew they had to be there! But I could not find them!  Well, I never would have searched the surname HERO!!

Thanks

Hello Scotsmum,

Well I'll have a try for you!

Please can you let me have their places and d.o.b. and an occupation for William?

Jean :)

William (b 21/9/1809) was a Flax Dresser, born Dundee.

(he died before the 1861 Census but wife and both sons were at Caldrum Street, Dundee by that time - daughter married and living nearby too.)

Elisabeth/Betsy was born Penicuik, Midlothian

All three children born Dundee, but cannot find records (only seem to have registered two other children - one died infancy/one stillbirth). I have been given a birthdate for John from one of his line of 7/7/1846 but it does not turn up on ScotlandsPeople. Going from other records I have with Isobel's (some records say Isabella) age, I assume c1836. And likewise from other records for David, c1838.

As I say, myself and others have tried the 1851 several times, but , you never know what another pair of eyes may find that we have missed.

Don't go to too much trouble though, as I have them for 1841 and 1861 etc. It would have just made it more complete to have 1851 too.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Scotsmum,

I've scanned through several thousand entries and not come up with anything yet. Definitely has been mistrancribed, however I've not given up yet! Were they in the same parish in 1841 & 1861 and where and when did William die?
