Hi Jean,

I can see how it can be George but I thought it started with an "E", see "Eigth". However I tried to prove with family names, and here is what I found.

John Reid married Flora Shaw 20 Jun 1830 Glasgow Lanarkshire (extracted)

In the 1851 census at Mearns, Busby, Renfrewshire

John Reid 39 b 1812 Glasgow Cotton Spinner
Flora Reid 37 b 1814 Blackburn Midlothian House Keeper
George Reid 19 b 1832 Glasgow Cotton Spinner
Drion (sic) Dixon? Reid 14 b 1837 Glasgow Cotton Spinner Piercer
Flora Reid 10 b 1841 Glasgow Scholar
Christina Reid 8 b 1843 Glasgow Scholar
John Reid 5 b 1846 Glasgow Scholar
James Reid 1 b 1850 Mearns Renfrewshire

In the 1861 census at 7 Eglinton Place Tradeston Govan

Flora McLean 20 b 1841 Glasgow Seaman’s wife
Christina Reid 18 b 1843 Glasgow Sister Cotton factory worker

In the 1861 brother, George Reid at Mill Building, Mearns Renfrewshire

George Reid 30 b 1831 Glasgow Cotton Spinner
Elizabeth Reid 30 b 1831 Ireland
John Reid 16 b 1845 Glasgow Brother Printfield Labourer
Margaret Reid 7 b 1854 Busby Renfrewshire Scholar
George Reid 6 b Glasgow Scholar
Dixon Reid 4 b 1857 Busby Renfrewshire
John Reid 2 b 1859 Busby Renfrewshire

In the 1871 census, at 15 Commercial Road, Hutchesontown, Glasgow

Flora G Reid 61 b 1810 Blackburn House Keeper
Christine Reid 28 b 1843 Glasgow Warehouse Servant
Mary Reid 17 b 1854 Busby Steam loom Weaver
Margaret Reid 2 b 1869 England Granddaughter

In the 1871 England census at 20 Garden Street, Keighley, West Yorks,

Dixon Reid 33 b 1838 Scotland Iron Dresser
Mary Reid 33 b 1838 Scotland
Flora Reid 12 b 1859 Scotland Woollen Spinner
George Reid 10 b 1861 Scotland Woollen Spinner

So could be George under namimg convention.

Tom
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

To add to the confusion, I think the 1st letter of his name looks like the 'S' in soldier

Considering that Jean (who posted the query) hasn't been online since May 2006, I don't think it matters a huge amount  :-\ ;D
