Nixon/Shaw Family in Helmsley area

Hi, still trying to unravel the connection of Joseph Shaw born about 1796 in Helmsley and my X3 Great G parents, Robert & Martha Nixon.  In the 1871 census Joseph is a widower and living with Robert & Martha.  He is described as Grandfather.  In 1881 he is living with Robert & Martha's daughter, Mary Ann Simpson (my X2 gg).  She is living with her son Fred and Joseph Shaw.  He is described as wife's father which is puzzling.  Mary Ann's husband, William, was visiting his Grandmother at the time of the census.  can anyone help me?  It would help if I could find Joseph in the 1851 census (in 1861 he is a widower and an agr. labourer)

Hi,
I have the Shaw family on a tree I have done for a friend.  Joseph was married to Mary Featherstone, who  had Martha before they married on 30.11.1840, (bpt Martha Featherstone 17.3.1839 at Helmsley). Mary Shaw died 31.5.1857 aged 37.  She was a lot younger than Joseph. Hope this helps,
